Shift work and bowling, am I crazy or what!
« on: July 31, 2003, 12:37:14 PM »
Thought this would be a timely topic since it`s 12:30 am and I have another 6 hours left in my shift. My wife thinks I`m nuts, but this is how my day will go. I will get off at 7:00 am, make the 30 minute drive home, sleep from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. get up shower, eat and head for the bowling center. This morning starts my 3 days off. I`ll roll 6 lines and visit with my wife. She works there. Go to the lounge and cool down with a couple of beers, talk bowling with the owner of the center. Roll three more lines and head back home.

I will do this week in and week out summer and winter. It`s the only way that I can keep my game reasonably sharp because of the shift work. During the winter season, throw in league nights and tournaments. Well, I guess what I want to know is how do others on this site handle shift work and bowling and still keep their game together.

Its all about dedication and how much you love to bowl. For me, bowling is something I HAVE TO DO!! I dont work a late shift as you do, but working the 9-5 thing doesnt make it easy either. I bowl a 7 o'clock league on Mondays in the summer and winter so I have time to drive the 45 minutes from work to home and then get to the center in time. I am also bowling in a late friday night league this winter and am contemplating a 3rd league on Thursday night. That plus my practice sessions on the weekend is how I keep my game up and improving.

Well i dont work cause im to young, but that sounds like life to me. I went to practice last night, and for some reason, i always get to bowl beside a circus. It gets fustrating have 16 people beside you that have never bowled. Also, there were plenty of lanes further down the house avaliable, why did she put them right beside me???

Channel Surfer, my house attendant has been a real jerk lately too. Me and my friend go practice every friday night on the sport shot which is only on lanes 1-12. He knows we are there to practice on that shot and no one is ever down that end of the house, but he keeps trying to refuse us the pairs that we request. He keeps saying "I dont wanna put anyone down that end of the house tonight". What a jerk!

And I thought I was the only crazy one on the board.  Our operations run 24/7.  I used to bowl the senior leagues during the day.  Got to be too much for me.  I was getting off work at 8 AM, getting home around 9 am, sleep for a couple of hours and then make the league at 1:00.  Finish bowling around 4PM, get back home around 5, clean up, eat, sleep for another couple of hours and then back to work.

Don’t know how many times last year I went in on the midnite shift, double over for the day shift, get to the alley at 5, sleep in the nursery for a couple of hours, start league at 6:30, get done about 9:30, catch another couple hours sleep in the nursery and head back in to work at midnites.

Won’t even go into some of the hours I’ve put in trying to get to a tournament and still make it back to work.

It's a pain.  I work a rotating 12 hour swing shift (6am to 6pm or vice versa).  The only thing we shut down for is hurricanes.  I've worked Christmas 8 out of the last 10 years.  Summer's not bad because there are a number of 7 pm leagues.  Easy to get to after work, and don't keep you up too late.  Winter is where the problem is.  I can't make the 6pm leagues on time, and the 8:30 leagues keep you out until 11pm.  By the time you drive home and get settled in, you're lucky to get 3-4 hours sleep.  I try to find leagues that will allow prebowling so I don't have to find a sub when I'm working nights.  It keeps me out of the competitive head to head scratch leagues (as a regular member), but I still get to bowl.  Prebowl lane conditions range from fresh to horrible.  My schedule does allow me a lot of time off during the week, so I get to take advantage of the cheaper practice rates.

Strider, are you that punk Hamster keeps complaining about prebowling all the time?

I don't think I could handle the 2 hours sleep, bowl, 2 hours sleep, back to work schedule.  I wonder how that affects your avg.?  Glad you can still enjoy the game though.

My brother used to work midnight to 8:30.  He'd walk into the bar at 9:00 and order up a beer with his food.  People would look at him like he was crazy for drinking in the morning.  They didn't realize 9:00 am to him was like their 6:00 pm.  Good luck to you guys!!

When I was working graveyard, I used to bowl a lot of morning leagues. Get off at 7:30 and head straight for the lanes. I would also bowl on Friday and Saturday night leagues. Now I'm on a swing, 12 - 10 four days a week. Still bowling my morning leagues. They start at 9 or 9:30 and I get finished up in time to make it to work by noon. Have Sunday, Monday and Tuesday off, so now I bowl those nights, and tournaments whenever I can get them.

Ouch!  Should have seen that coming.  .  Nope, sorry, not a Yaba punk.

What really stinks is having to miss position rounds and rolloffs.  You do everything you can to swap, but it's not always possible.

I worked a very similiar shift at one time to what you are currently doing. It is not easy at all. I would say try it for a few weeks and see how you feel. If you need more sleep, just wake up at 1 and throw those games every other day.

Guess what? I'm doing this too, shift work. But there is one major difference between myself and the rest of the users that have posted. I work in a bowling centre! I am that jerk at the control desk, lol. And we are open 24/7. We never close, new years, xmas, we never close and not just because we lost the keys to the front doors, lol. We are located very close to downtown part of the city and just one high way exit down from chinatown.
So during the day you get the wealthy seniors. and at night you get all the people coming out of the bars and clubs, and they come and bowl. plus the asian (asian, not catagorizing sorry)clients come to bowl late at night, usually starting at 7 pm and they don't leave until 5 or 6 am. some even stay for the breakfast special. usually the last pair of lanes we give out are around 3;30 or 4 am. the bar closes at 3 am, the restaurant is open 24/7. the pool hall up stairs is open from 830 am to 1230am. and there is a huge arcade with over 75 games (racing, every type you can think of) which is always open as well.

it's usually quiet after 4 am and i have time to cycle the machines and replace all the balls on the racks. so after so quick tidying up it's about 5-530am and i sit around and read or sleep a bit until 8 am when the next person come in. And there is a manager or assistant manger everyday from 8 am to midnight. I personally work 10 pm to 8 am 3 or 4 days per week.
