Shoe Rental Sticker shock!
« on: December 28, 2004, 11:16:29 AM »
I am currently in FL with a family reunion. We wanted to get a bowling outing so I called the closest lanes, an AMF house. Talk about sicker shock they charge $4.00 to rent shoes. I haven't rented in a long time so I called another house $2.00. What is the norm in your area?

Ok, it's normally $2 but the problem is that it is an AMF House, and they are ridiculous in almost all of their prices.

One house around here charges $4, but with every rental you get a pair of decent quality sport socks to keep, so that makes it hurt a little less.
Makes a $100 pair of shoes that are yours alone seem cheap, though - don't it???

Good point Nick.  I was at the mall once and saw a group of teenagers all wearing rental shoes.  Must have stolen them on disco, I mean "Extreme", bowling night.

How about charging $4 and returning $2 when the shoes are returned!

Still it's high.  When a pair of rental shoes cost is less than $15 it doesn't take long to make your money.  Most leagues around here if you need them they are free.  It's just the open bowlers that pay thru the nose.  Even if you bowl once or twice a month it's worth a $35 pair in the pro shop.  We sell a ball bag and shoe starter combo for right around $100 which is perfect for the casual and beginning bowler.  Sometimes we clear out of shoes at under $20 near the end of the year.  If you do have to rent shoes I feel for you sometimes they are expensive and nasty.

They have to cover the cost of replacements, ya know?

Around here, most places require you to leave one of your outside shoes with the desk when you rent a house pair. That seems to encourage shoe returns.

$4 rental for an hour seems extravagant for a $15-25 cost of a new pair, even if pairs do go missing at times.

YEP.. Charlest thats what they do in the one house we bowl at..
You have to give them one of your shoes, this cuts out the steeling.

2.50 house 1
2.00 house 2
3.50 house 3

It made paying 50.00 for shoes well worth it to me.  LOL
