Shooting at Spares: Plastic or NO Plastic
« on: April 01, 2005, 12:06:29 PM »
I've always shot at my 10 pins with my plastic ball; however, today I realized that with my ravage I canflatted my wrist out to get a straight ball just the same. Infact; I made more 10 pins with this way than I ever did with my plastic. Anyone else use reactive at right side spares?

must say...HECK NO. I tried this for a while, even tried taking my ring finger out to flatten the roll. No luck. Went back to plastic, has worked wonders, never plan to change. Just me though.

I might need to get a new spare ball because I hate the span on it. That might be part of my problem, but I think it is so easy to shoot at 10 pins with my ravage.

All I can really say to you is...do whatever works and stick with it! That is what counts. I may like plastic, you may like reactive, but what really matters in the end is that we both kill that d*** ten pin

If you're a house bowler & the shot is the same all the time, you can do fine with  a regular ball. But if you are travelling to diffrent houses & or bowling on different patterns, plastic at ALL of your spares is almost a must.

I throw a plastic ball at all of my ten pins, and if you watch the pros, they use a plastic ball on most spares.  The left side, 4 & 7 pins, are my weakness in using my plastic ball, so for now I've been using my strike ball, but I plan on working om my problem over the summer.  To each his own, what ever works for you, & is comfortable to you.

I rarely, if ever, use a spare ball anymore.

I have learned to just flatten out, increase my speed, and throw it cross lane at the 10. I did this so I can bring another ball, instead of some plastic ball

I tried the old Track boxing glove ball for a little while. Missed every spare I shot at. Sold it and went back to using the Sensor. I have just got that out of my line up and am using a Power Groove now. Able to flatten wrist out and go pretty straight at it.

I have used both reactive and plastic to make 10 pins through the years.  The reactive ball will work fine if you flatten your wrist like you have stated, but there is less margin for error.

For me, I think its just more a matter of confidence and comfort, thats why i use the ravage at spares.

I believe with the amount of money spent on bowling balls these days, I'd rather use my spare ball and save on the wear and tear of resin and particle balls by using them for my strike balls. I'm fine with making room in my bag for the plastic. Especially if you bowl long tournaments where the head oil is gone and the back ends are flying, you may need to use your plastic as your strike and spare ball...

I use whatever ball I'm using that night and just move left and change my aiming point.  I think I subconsciencly(sp?) throw the ball harder and put less revs on it, but I don't have a lot of revs to begin with.  I still miss too many 10 (or 6,10) but thats usually because I miss my aiming point. Same with the 4/7 - I just move farther right, but I think I subconsciencly throw the ball slower.

Thats just the way I learned to shoot those spares.  I tried using a polyester (Snuffy!) but I wasn't able to figure out the new aiming points, got frustrated and went back to throwing reactive at my spares.

Let somebody else said - use whatever works best for you and stick with it.
