I'm having a load of trouble picking up spares and am just wondering if the way i go about making them is wrong. Tonight I missed 6 of 8 ten pins and chopped all the double wood. I ended up shooting a 620 but with spares it couldve and wouldve been alot higher. I'm using a polyester ball for the ten pins and strike ball for everything else.

What type of approach do you guys take for spares?? Do you take a plastic ball and throw hard and straight at all your spares...mainly the 10 pin...or do you put the same amount of revs on the ball only difference being plastic.

I myself put revs on the ball when shooting the ten pin. It seems like when a make the first couple I usually make them all but when i miss I never can get into a groove. I guess it's all mental really.

I pretty much do the same thing that Borden explains here, but I do not throw a plastic ball. I, rather, throw a dead ball (end over end) - using this kind of "system"

I do much of what Jermy suggested.

I line up so my left foot will finish over the gutter, and for just the 10 pin i can throw it up 20 and hit it. And move that spot to the left a few boards for any combination on the right side of the lane. 3-10 split, 3-6-10

When i throw the ball i put little to no hand in it.

I have found good sucess doing this, even though im not a high average bowler. My spare shooting, including the 10 pin has become very consistant.

Thanks for the replys guys. I suppose I am a tweener...hell i dont know...I dont crank the ball and am pretty smooth with the release. I think i'll practice with my old teal rhino and shoot across the lane with no hand. I really do appreciate your help guys. I'm gonna bookmark this post and try a few different things on dollar a game Tuesdays

Im somewhat of a cranker, i put alot of hand into the ball. But i manage to throw it cross lane with little to no hand, and a good deal of accuracy.

Just took a little practice, and adjusting from there. If it works for you, then change the board you put the ball down, for different combonitations to see how it works for you.

Everyone is usually impressed that i can throw a ball with no hand to pick up anything on the right side of the 10 pin.

use a release that prohibits hooking and use a plastic spare ball for all spares except double wood combinations (as you need angle to carry the back pin). The use of a spare ball will not prohibit the ball from hooking if you use a hooking release on dried out conditions. The point of using a spare ball is to eliminate as much hook as possible so that you can eliminate the condition on the lane. Using a powerfull release and a plastic ball will still cause the ball to hook.

The difficulty in this method comes from learning how to square up to your spare because today bowlers are accustomed to opening up to hook the ball. It feels wrong to square up but when going straight with a plastic ball and using a non hooking release you must square up.

Just figured I'd post somewhat of an update. I practiced squaring up and throwing hard and straight with great results. Throughout the month of december I only missed 3 single pins. I shot 4 out of 5 weeks over 700 and raised my average from 196 to 204. I also picked something else from this site and that was bending the knees and getting lower. It has really helped me become ALOT more consistent.
