« on: August 14, 2008, 03:20:27 PM »
hello. i have been having some trouble on shorter sport shots and i was wondering what you guys use on them. i have a lot of trouble keeping the ball from jumping off to hard. or just rolling out and having no energy. what balls do you use? prep? layouts? hand positions? and a all that

on all sport shots, my hand stays behind the ball. but i like my rico'd Twisted at 4000 to play the shorter stuff. other than that, i use anything that gives me a smooth transition from the oil to the dry

A really weak reactive solid, with some surface, drilled really weak.

A Street Rod Solid drilled 5x4 would be a great choice

I want to say pretty much anything that's not polished should work okay on shorter patterns.  But that's sort of ignorant because you can't take a dull hook monster either.  So I guess, as was said already, something with a fairly smooth transition is pretty good, and I think low-medium differential balls as well.  For me, my Rival or Counter Strike tend to work on short patterns.

I've seen one smooth Vapor Zone off the transition, so it might be possible.  From what I've gathered, though, it's a pretty angular ball in nature so it's hard for me to judge.  It's worth a try if you haven't had much luck so far, and if any of your stuff will work on short patterns when they're fresh it would be the Vapor or Spit Fire without the polish of course.

If they don't work and you decide to resort to getting a new ball for short oil, I would opt for a Medium Oil solid like a Sure Fire if you wanted to stay with Storm.  A Pluto might be an option as well.

Most people are suggesting balls to use, but the most important thing is to attack the pattern from the right part of the lane.  On shorter patterns the ball is going to move a lot on the longer dry back end, so you need your ball farther right at the breakpoint.  Many people make the mistake of treating short oil like "dry" and move left, which is wrong.

If the pattern is 36ft or less, you want your ball outside 5, and on patterns as short as 34 you will need a breakpoint at the end of the pattern on the 3 board.

These patterns are usually laid out so that you have to start your ball farther right too, so you will indeed need a tame ball, probably a low end reactive, or even urethane.  I have been using a Neptune or a "prpoer core" Urethane recently on these patterns, both with a 2" pin so that the ball kicks less off the backend.

Thanks for posting that Roto.  Some time during my post I thought about whether he was playing the lanes correctly but didn't say anything.  I stand by my opinion that something non-polished will work best and in combination with playing the lanes like Roto said you should at least find a line you can use.  My breakpoint was outside 6 on all animal patterns but the Shark in my PBAX league, and I don't believe my feet ever got inside 18.  Those were lines I've never played before but I really liked it.

With your revs, all the balls in your arsenal look too strong, though I dont know how you have them drilled... try a very short pin, or a much weaker ball.

I like my World Class Reactive on this. Pin above bridge, CG an inch right of center of the grip. This ball from the outside looks like its not really doing much. But it just seems to knock all ten down on anything that finds some headpin. Like the others said, up the back of the ball does more than the ball choice does. More roll is key. The less a ball wants to flare the better.

Im so glad people are brainwashed to think that TRACK sucks. And its even funnier when im carrying with my TRACK ball and they're going flat ten with their BRUNSWICK ball.
