short back swing
« on: May 30, 2008, 11:59:40 AM »
I have a short back swing and I was wondering should I try and make it at least shoulder high.  I want to be a good bowler so bad but need so help.  When I get a video camera I will post a video for you guys to help.  I am trying to work on my game by myself but I think I am failing badly.  I am a okay bowler and just want to be better.

a higher backswing alone will not make you a better player. marshall holman bowled his way into the pba hall of fame with a very short backswing. seel out a certified coach and good luck.

As long as your arm swing is free, any back swing height is fine.  When you are using muscle to keep it low or using too much muscle to get the ball higher, that causes you to miss your target.  If you just use gravity on the down swing you will have more speed + accuracy than if you just muscled the ball all the way through.

Some things to evaluate your game:

Look at how you finish at the line, are you in balance or do you fall off the shot?  You want to be balance when throwing the ball.  (look at my profile video, I'm falling off the shot.  that is something that I do occasionally but thats what i'm working on to improve.)

Do you drift with your feet, drifting is OK, but only if it is consistent from shot to shot.  If your drift is inconsistent, then you are out of balance somewhere in the swing.

Your set up before the shot, is that consistent?  All great athletes no matter what they do always have a routine that they go through to get ready, you should be no different.  For me, I pick up wipe the ball with a towel, dry my hand, and then set up for the shot, always trying to do the same exact thing.  put my feet on the same spot, look at the same mark, set my hand position, and go.  A good preshot routine helps take some of the thinking out of the game.  It just lets you bowl.

It doesn't have to look pretty, just be repeatable.
Good luck!

I am with Hitsomeballs on this - a low backswing must not be a bad thing, it is more about the timing of the forward pendulum and your footwork that creates the necessary speed.

But: a short backswing can be the result of a muscled/controlled swing - that's the Marshall Holman style. While it might have worked for him (he also started form a crouched position), it could be a sign that your armswing is not free, which is rather recommended.

Besides, a high backswing also need time to go up and down again. It can lead to (new) timing problems. Forcing the swing high up can also cause some undesirable effects with excessive muscle input.
A high back swing just for the sake of it does not lead anywhere - if in doubt, consult a coach. Or, try to shoot a video of yours and post it here, there are some very helpful eyes on this board that might help you with some good footage.

i have a very short and copmact swing the only problem it gives me is when the lanes are really fried and i lack the speed to get the ball down the lanes. thats why i have a ball drilled negative and have to get inside and find the oil. the high back swing is good and all i know a 23year old kid thats already threw his shoulder out from his high swing and rip motion good bowler but having to learn to throw the ball again

When a house bowler misses the mark, misses the break point and strike, for many ppl its called a wallshot. When a pro does that its call adjustment

When a house bowler gets his finger stuck in the ball and fall on the lanes, for many ppl its called lame bowler. When a pro does that its called the Machuga flop! ha i like this one.
