hello. i have been having some trouble on shorter sport shots and i was wondering what you guys use on them. i have a lot of trouble keeping the ball from jumping off to hard. or just rolling out and having no energy. what balls do you use? prep? layouts? hand positions? and a all that

My favorite choices on shorter but demanding patterns are my Revolution Renegade (a current Avalanche Solid might come close) as well as my Black Pure Hammer. Both balls have excellent length and do not overreact, and they are also easy to handle when the pattern starts to change - that's when they really shine.

You might be able to use tronger pieces on short oil when the lanes are fresh, but with traffic things can get ugly quickly, and strong balls will have you fighting. Use a weaker solid reactive, and start with as straight line. This will not look flashy at first, but keeps you out of split trouble until the lane opens up - and then you have room to cover more boards with this equipment. Stronger balls will start suffering from burn out, over/under hell and too much entry angle (with lots of corner pins and wash outs) while the weak ball is much easier to control.

It all depends, on some of the shorter patterns you just have to deal with that reaction and play a shot that will still give you enough entry angle.

I don't really think the equipment per say is the biggest help, its just hand positions and speed control. As stated already I try and stay right on the back of the ball and stay firm with the speed, this allows a smoother and weaker transition downlane and with all of the extra backend the ball still will hook.

Its a game of finding the entry angle more than anything though, and for me on shorter stuff I will play the "roll out" reaction and just try and get the ball to finish a little higher in the pocket, and when that occurs I tend to carry very well.

thank you everyone. i have a columbia spirit and a green gargoyle thats drilled to be real smooth and controlled thats about as weak as i got but i am considering the street rod solid. and maybe doing a pin axis drill or maybe 2in from pap. do you think that would work as well as staying up the back of the ball?

Don't be afraid to use balls with some surface when bowling on the Cheetah.  Also an up the back of the ball release works better for me.
