Do we really get any exercise when bowling?
« on: January 10, 2008, 10:00:55 AM »
Well, do we? And burn extra calories as well? Since there is probably more time spent sitting and standing around, awaiting our turn, than we do actually bowling.

I wonder if any studies have been done. The subject came up the other day as I told my cardiologist that I bowled 3 - 4 times a week. He maintained that bowling is not really exercise as it does not raise your heart rate.

And, some folks have such a slow approach and kinda drop the ball out on to the lane that it is doubtful that they are expending any energy, other than picking up the ball.

Any thoughts or ideas on this?

Put it on league style play by your self on practice night and never sit down. Bet you will be tired then.

I go and rent a lane for an hour.  I can usually bowl 7+ games in that hour and I'm worn out after words.  But then again, I bowl for the whole hour, only stopping to wait for the ball return or to drink some pop.  So I would say that I get a good workout in that format.  Leagues, well, not so much.

Thats nothing, me and my friends get a pair of lanes for 3 hrs and bowl around 16+ games. We got that on mondays also but for 2 hrs and usually get about 10+ games in. We really are about dead after that cause its late at night one starting at 12 and ending at 2am then the other from 9pm-12mid so we get tired and its always hot in ours.

I've done the math on this before.

All of my equipment is 15 lbs.
I average just under 7 strikes per game.  I'll use 6 for this example.

Over the course of an 8 game block I:
Lift 1680 pounds.
Walk 2240 feet, 1120 of which is carrying a 15 lb weight.
Perform 112 deep knee bends on one leg.

That's assuming only 10 frames per game - not filling out the 10th, so these numbers are low.

If you don't burn calories just doing that, then you're dead.

There have been studies done.  Very little exercise value.

Is that cosmic bowling?

No, its just regular bowling. Our house has specials all through out the week like before 3pm on week days you can bowl 2hrs for $8 (can't do that im at work) then mondays 1130-2am for $5 wensdays $7 for 9-12mid which is all just regular bowling so we get a lot of practice time. Then friday and sat they have cosmic which i don't do unless its with friends for fun.

Better than sitting in a chair but not much different than just walking.

It all depends on the amount of games that you play at one time, and the speed at which you play all the games in that one set.  I average about 10 games each practice session.  If you play the games with no break between games, and within the games, no breaks between frames, then you can get a real work out.  On a ten game set, this gets pretty exhausting, and I tend to sweat alot.  During league, there are only three games, and the pace between frames and games is a lot slower.  So I don't get physically tired during league.

Curling those 16oz mugs of Budwieser is a great 3hour workout! Of course since it is bowling, it's only Bud Lite. Got to watch those calories!

If you've ever eaten a small amount of food before league in a rush, you should know it burns energy pretty good. I'm typically rubbery by the end of the second game if I don't eat well before bowling. I started buying protein shake mix at 1200 calories per pop when I find myself in those situations. Night and day when I drink them.
