Shorter practice time
« on: November 16, 2004, 03:32:30 AM »
Around here they use to allow 10 minutes of practice before league would start. This time was regardless of how many bowlers were on a team.

I have noticed that several houses in the area have reduced the practice time to 8 minutes, even 5 person teams. Some bowlers don’t even get 4 shots under this scenario.

I can’t believe they are saving enough with that two minutes to make up for all the ill will they are generating.

Is anyone else experiencing shortened practice times?

LL, I don't believe there is a rule, but I may be wrong. Most houses will not allow you to bowl on the pair you have for league.

J Mac, I also consider it unethical and unsportsmanlike. Kind of like a code of honor. Guess it makes me house hack then. With the lack of oil in some houses now a days someone can burn up some oil real quick.

TrimMan...  there are 39 boards out there... I'm sure they aren't going to burn up the WHOLE lane.  Open play/practice before a league doesn't bother me all that much.  What really twists my nuts is all the guys that b!tch about not having a shot while they stand in roughly the same spot all night.

While I'd appreciate a re-oil after the morning/afternoon lady leagues get done with our lanes on Wednesday and Thursday I've realized that a little challenge is good for me as a bowler learning the game.

You may not be a house hack.  Ditto for Big Bowling.  Maybe you're just skilled enough to be tired of flingers that don't have to deal with what's left on the lane once the lights turn on.

Practicing on your pair doesn't give you any advantage unless you, yourself, are being "unethical and unsportsmanlike" by purposefully altering the shot.  Does it really matter though?  They let the pro's do it, so why can't we?

It's kind of hard to read the lanes if you don't know their language...

What difference does it make if you practice on your pair before league?  It shouldn't matter, by the end of the practice time, the shot will ahve changed anyway.  If I can get there eary enough to practice before league, I really don't worry about what pair I'm on, and more often than not, I'll get just one lane, which will actually change that shot more that practicing on both lanes.

Here's the text that J_Mac posted the link to (so the lazy readers don't have to look it up):
quote:

16 May a team or individual come early to practice on the lanes they are scheduled to bowl on later for league play?

WIBC/ABC/YABA do not have a rule prohibiting practice games before league play. If the league wanted to adopt a rule, the proprietor would have to be consulted first. Because the league has no jurisdiction until play has commenced, this type of rule may be an infringement on the proprietor’s rights as an independent business person.

Jeremy Vitug – I normally get to the center 45 minutes ahead of time. I don’t want to be rushed getting ready. I will stretch my legs and arms for at least 15 minutes before they turn on practice. I swing a ball back and forth to loosen up my shoulder.

However it still takes me more than 4 shots to get where I am throwing the ball well and it is generally the third or fourth frame before my ball speed reaches it peak

At 19 you don’t understand how older bodies work.

As far as the line, in league I generally have a good idea where to play the lane from previous weeks. And as long as it is a typical house shot it doesn’t take long to find it. But when you don’t really throw the ball good until the fourth or fifth shot it is hard to gauge the exact reaction and get the carry.

For tournaments where you don’t have any idea of the shot and it might not be the typical house shot, finding the proper line and equipment is more problematic.

While it cost so for the house (electricity, wear and tear on pinsetters, lanes, pins) it doesn’t seem like a couple of minutes would make that much difference for all the ill will they generate.

I have to agree My wednesday league gives you just enough time to throw if your lucky 4 total balls sometimes less. Also my saturday league when it comes to the playoffs only allows one ball per lane(which is unreal). The Pa state tournament only allows 2 balls per lane again unreasonable. I am a golfer and have played no many of golf tournaments and before every tournament i am there early to get warmed up whether it is a singles event or a team event. To me i think it is terrible at tournaments or in a playoff that you cant throw hardly any warmups. Me i use warmups first to get loose then i look at reaction and then get the feel. i don't need to throw 20 balls but i do like to throw a few.

We get 10 minutes of warm-up WITHOUT pins. Thats almost too much time! LOL! Of course, its so much faster and most are warmed up and shouting for the pins in less than that time.
I can understand why a center would want to cut down on practice time with pins. A few minutes doesnt seem like much, I know, but it costs money to run a pin setter. A lot of money. Maybe you can persuade them to let you practice without pins. It costs them less and who needs pins anyway?
