I remember back when I was 10-11-12 years old my first ball my Dad bought me was the Brunswick Heat...10 lbs. conventional grip. I didn't get a fingertip ball until a few years later, 13-14 years old.  That was a 12lb. Brunswick Red Heat.

So for your nephew I would suggest something like a Tropical Storm, Power Groove, Tornado, something along those lines. To me I wouldn't want to spend too much money, especially when at 11 you grow like a weed. In a few years if he keeps pursuing the game get him into some mid-entry higher hook potential balls.

This is the time to develop the raw talent and fundamentals.

I would start him out with a relaxed semi finger tip ball(not a regular finger tip), his hand and bones in his hand are still growing.. you don't want to accidently hurt them if his span is too long..

His hand is MUCH more likely to get hurt in a semi fingertip ball than in a regular full fingertip drilled with the proper relaxed span. The semi fingertip requires the finger to bend in a place where there isn't a joint, and this is not natural. Find the driller in your area who is known as the best ball fitter and take him there. You (and he) won't be sorry.

Semi-fingertip (between the two finger joints) is not advisable because it puts strain on BOTH joints. You should go either conventional or fingertip, but not in between.

A properly fitted fingertip ball will help him tremendously because most 11 year olds don't throw very heavy equipment. They usually don't throw very hard either so an entry level reactive can be an excellent choice.

Sometimes they can't go fingertip w/ inserts because their fingers are too small for even the smallest ladies inserts. In that case your decision gets easier.

I agree that it's an option. Finger inserts help a youngster without much grip strength is the only thing. Most 11-12 year olds around here are still pretty skinny. There's always the exception, though.

Last Christmas I got my 10 year old daughter her first reactive and her first fingertip ball, a 10# tropical storm. It was a pretty easy transition for her and her avg. jumped like 20 pins or so.  Get the grips for it too they should have some that fit him, my daughter got like a -1 size for her grips.
