can poor lane maintenance cause you to inherit bad habits?
« on: June 01, 2005, 04:49:25 AM »
How many of you have developed a poor(perhaps very poor) habit because the lanes dictated such?  Just how long did it take for you to break this habit?  Also, what was the 'inherit' habit?

Also, for those who have never used a coach, what would you rate your knowledge of YOUR game?

Vernon: I grew up on a set of lanes with poor maintenance, then they got better when a new owner took over, than they got worse in the past 7 years with two different owners. Having a coach through college bowling helped me get out of those bad habits, as well as developing a set of equipment that could tackle the bad patterns without really taking a huge bite of my wallet. The inherit habit I picked up was muscling the ball to get the ball down the lane more...as the lanes would play dry to start, and be desert like by the end of a league session. My coaches have taught me techniques to get the ball further down the lane with hand releases, finger positioning and where to release the ball on the lane without having to always muscle the shot.

I have a coach right now and I see the positives in that- especially due to the fact that I only see him for coaching on lanes that I never regularly bowl on for league/tournament play.

Hey FBM,

Lane conditions usually dictate the type of players we become, if this is the only house we bowl in.  Imagine a house were always dry, guaranteed that either 1)the bowler would learn to create speed or 2)create loft or 3) start spinning the ball to adapt to his game to the enviroment.  If he/she doesn't, they most likely will end up not scoring.  I'm speaking in the sense of those who will excel at scoring on that condition.  Vice versa effect if the lanes were flooded.

Simply heard it enough times on TV in Pro golf about how guys from Texas learn to hit the ball lower because of how windy it is there.  Their game developed to a condition that helped them score or rather not score.

Best story heard, 5 guys at the Nationals.  Every guy in one step or another had a sever dip in his approach, when asked if they were coached by the same person, the reply was that they were all from a small basement center in the midwest and there was a water pipe that ran right in front of them on the approach.  They all had to duck under this pipe to avoid hitting it...

Adapt or suffer the consequences.......
