thoughts on the scorpion pattern...
« on: February 10, 2009, 02:51:36 AM »
i was wondering if any of you guys that do regionals that post on here or anybody who has bowled on it lately could tell me how it generally plays. we have a win a spot tournament for an upcoming southern regional tournament, and i was wondering what to expect. i generally have bowled well on shark before, is it similar? my rev rate is 450-500, ball speed can vary from 19mph to about 14.5 if needed. i generally use storm stuff, you can check my profile for my current arsenal. also, what surfaces work good for scorpion as well? thanks in advance guys, mike myrick aka stopncrank

I bowled on it a few months ago, the 'newer' version of it.  I found that it was very playable, and our hook spot was around the 5-6-7 area way down lane.  I found myself throwing straight up 6 with my Dimension, and it worked well.  Carry down was predictable, and as it started to break down it got more wiggle room.  I didn't get to see the pattern just open up, but I'm sure I'd just keep moving left.  Very fun pattern, loads of oil up front and drier backends create loads of carrydown for a long while (about 2 games for me, with 4 folks on a pair).  I hope this helps!

I used both shiny and dull.  I start off with dull and went to shiny when it started to open up a bit.

I liked this pattern, I played it deep. Dont remember exact boards but it was a move left kind of pattern(longer). My best games were with a Radar Lock, a strong skid/snap pearl.

This pattern can play alot of different ways.  I like it the most out of all the patterns, most of the time I play way in with my breakpoint around 6-7.  Sometimes, depending on the surface a hook spot can develop on the 1-2 board.  If that happens, I'll  play it firing around 7-8 out to the one board and scored there well also.  I usually throw strong balls with weaker drills and strong surfaces.

cool, assymetrical stuff should work good once carry down hits? i LOVE to play deep, so this could end up being a good experience for me. with shark i normally try to play straighter first and then chase the pattern left, so scorpion should play similar, right?
