Should I buy a spare ball?

I am terrible spare shooter,and was wondering 1-How to get better and 2- should I get a spare ball? Right now I just take hand off of my strike ball,but I'm not consistent. Sometimes the ball will hook too much, and I'll miss spares.

Consider buying a White Dot.  They're reasonably priced and roll VERY straight to help with picking up spares.

If you're on a really tight budget, used ones (plastic) can be found at most proshops reasonably priced.

Buy a spare ball because
- they're easy to throw straight and they will increase your spare percentage, AND
- they're significantly cheaper to replace than resin or particle balls.
(why waste throwing your strike ball 2-8 times per game and watch it die that much more quickly, unless you're throwing a Dyno-Thane Soaker coverstock.)

solidtenpin -- PRACTICE your spare shooting even more than you practice your strike shot.  There is no law against shooting spare shots at a full rack.  You can usually tell whether or not you would have made the conversion.  A spare ball would help, but not as much as extra practice.  Also, try to find a coach who can teach you a spare system to use.  --  JohnP

OK I'm going to play devil's advocate here.

If you're a terrible spare shooter, most likely you're not very accurate.  Which means GETTING A STRAIGHT SPARE BALL WON'T HELP ANY.

Part of this problem may be that:

"Right now I just take hand off of my strike ball..."

While you should adjust off your strike ball to shoot most spares, adjust your feet or target... not the amount of hand you put on the ball.  This could be why you're not very accurate shooting your spares.  There are very good websites (don't remember them right now) that talk about the 2-4-6 or 3-6-9 method of spare shooting.  It does take full pages to talk about whole systems people use to shoot spares.

And yes... PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE etc.
