Our local center runs a break the bank.  For those who may not know if you strike in all three games in certain frames you win a cash prize.  The prize increases from week to week with the amount of entries.  

Here is my problem.  A bowler on my team struck in the required frames.  At the end of the night, when he went to the counter to tell them he was told that he would not be paid, because he did not follow the rules.  He needed to get a print out of the scores after each game.  The rules are not posted at center control where you sign up for break the bank.  the Rules are posted about ten feet away on a double sided bulletin board.  And they are posted only on one side.  The center is a 48 lane house with 24 lanes on each side.  

At center control there is a display hanging from the ceiling which states the frames you need to strike an the dollar amount that could be won.  Also there is a piece of paper that states it is the bowler is responsible for knowing the rules.  

When I spoke to the manager he stated he would not pay because the bowler did not follow the rules.  Here is my argument.  The rules should be posted where you sign up.  I was told the bowler should ask what the rules are.  I feel like this is a hustle to make money similar to a three card monte or a shell game.

By the way the bowler would have won about $230.  The bowler is very angry so that is why I acted as a spokesperson.  Should he try to complain further?  Any suggestions?

Well....

There might need to be more documentation to the fact,
but common sense would tell you that if you are doing something
like that they are going to want to see proof, so you would need a
print out of some sort.


I don't think he has a leg to stand on.

Is this an old center or do they have modern equipment?  The rule you talk about used to be the same at my place but since they upgraded 3 years ago you can pull frame by frame scores from 2 weeks ago so it is no longer required to get them to print it out after each game.  If they cannot do that from the control center then your guys is SOL and did not follow the rules.  They need a computer print out to verify that he actually did it.

$230?? Must be an easy one. Ours is currently over $4200. We have to pay $2 to get in it though. But the only rule is that if a score needs to be corrected, the control desk has to be notified.

I have a print out of the scores made sure to get that at the end of the night so we could have proof it was done.  Do you agree the rules should be posted where you sign up or is it ok to post somewhere else?

So it sounds like you have to bring a print off up after each game?

I would agree that the rules need to be placed at the sign up sheet, and anywhere that there is mention of it.

Once again though I would have checked on when do they need proof.

Should the rules be posted where you sign up?  Yes.  But, at the end of the day, it is up to the center to decide where the rules are posted and it is up to the bowler to make sure they know the rules and follow them as posted.  

I think it's a dumb rule, since almost everywhere I've ever been with electronic scoring will let you print out all three games at the end of the nite, but since the rules are posted, I think your friend is SOL.

If you have a print off for the night and they say it has to be done each game not at the end of the night then you lose. You can argue that the rules should be posted on every lane it still doesn't change them. Your friend assumed he knew the rules and in the end he didn't. He could have asked when he signed up, but he didn't.

It is stupid, but it is the rules.

You think it is to prevent cheating but if you can print off a sheet at the end of the night it is all the same to me.

It is their paper to waste. Want to change the rules, have everyone that signs up get a print out after every game even if they don't strike when needed. The paper and ink cost will add up.

So you have a print out from the end of the night with all three games?  
Are they saying he doesn't get paid because he didn't get the print out after each game?  
Will the print out from the end of the night show any corrections that were made to the scores like the one after each game?
If it will then I don't see a difference between the two print outs as far as accuracy and what he actually bowled.  

He may be out of luck because of the piece of paper that states it is the bowler is responsible for knowing the rules.... its still kind of a petty rule though..

You can complain to your local or state agency that controls any sort of games, raffles , and sweepstakes ... but more than likely the bowling alley will just stop the game and you'll ruin it for everyone.
I'm sure there is a law that states where the rules need to be displayed. They just can't display the rules where ever they choose.

You can probably tell I'm from California.. there are laws and regulating agencies for everything out here.. not saying I agree.. that is just the way it is..

I guess I should check the "rules" at my center!

Our pot is up to $1200 I believe.  It was carried over from last year and I missed it by one strike last season.  I hit every strike needed except for the first ball in the 3rd game.  Man I was pissed at myself, because the one I missed was completely my fault as I tugged it thru the nose.

I wish our strike to win pots were so easy last year it was 18,673 before it was hit.
