Shshh!! It is a secret.
« on: February 23, 2009, 10:48:40 PM »
I would presume most would look at a tournament as a competition where you are out to beat as many of the competition as you can. And hopefully win as much money as possible.

Then why if I bowl in a tournament before you should I tell you anything I learned that would help you score better on the same condition?

Wouldn’t this only be hurting my own chances?

When asked I generally just say my game is so unique that anything I learned wouldn’t help them.

Both in league and tournament, I do not reply directly to answers about the lane or what I am doing (esp. when others are struggling) - as long as we are competing. But after the show is over, I had several very enthusiastic discussions with other bowlers about the occurences and impressions, and to share opinions.

There' s a time for everything.

I think it is okay to say "they are hooking" or "they are tight, I played close to the gutter".  I won't get into ball and adjustments most of the time.  I rarely see guys that throw it like me, so I don't normally play the same part of the lane as everybody else.

Take the 2008 OPEN championships:
I play inside of 10 for the entire tournament.  I never found a look with a bp outside of 10.  Other people started on the gutter and moved in.  I scored well from inside, while others did well from outside.

It really boils down to execution.

I lie to them.  If the shot was dry, I tell them to bring a hook monster, because they oiled 50 feet.  If they oiled 50 foot, I tell them to bring plastic because they were hooking at my feet.

Every bowler has eyes.

So, as competitors we should all be able to observe what others are doing and make proper determinations on where the line might be and what type of equipment to use, whether it be league or tournament play.

When it comes to competition, to each his own--I don't feel the need to coach competitors, and if so asked, I just say that everyone has their own game and style, and politely suggest to them to watch what others are doing.

Quite often I find that you do not have to lie at all... I find it amusing when players around me do not have a clue what is going on out there - best (and frequent) scene are players with meek releases who toss high end stuff hwich does not move at all. "Ah, it MUST be oily out there!". That the ball does not bring back any oil at all, or that their release could be crappy, seems to be outside of the potential universe of reality. Just plain fun, and when these people even start to self-destruct, it gets even better

In Vegas you actually believe you can sneak a girl (ugly) into your bathroom while with a roomy.  Alcohol makes you brave and stupid

Not exactly sure what you were watching or when you went, but the week I was there, anyone that *tried* playing outside was dead in the water and anyone that was scoring was at 15 or left at the arrows.  Maybe it was just the way your team/cross broke them down, but playing outside was out of the question from what I watched.

I'm simply saying "others" have said they did very well from the outside.  I'm sure if you had 2 teams breaking them down right it could be done.
