tape and pitches/span
« on: May 08, 2012, 11:51:14 AM »
Just a quick question about using tape and other gripping products in the front part of the thumb hole, or thumb pad side.

how many tapes does it take to change the span and/or pitch in the thumb?

I normally use 2 tapes up front and taper them. But, lately I've used 3 textured tapes up front.

I'm just curious cause I've seen other bowlers thumb hole and their tapes are many and/or scattered all over the thumb hole.

You put tape wherever you have to in order to achieve a good fit.  Stop over-thinking it.  Do what you have to do to get a good thumb feel and don't worry what others are doing.

being "curious" is over thinking? I really don't care what others do, it's just something I observed over the years with tapes and was "curious" about it. Before I used MC, I used white tape in the back and front to get a snug/tight fit. several years ago, a proshop guys told me that white tape is supposed to be used ONLY in the front part of the thumb. Really?

Simply put, your pro shop operator is a neanderthal. Tape is all personal preference, no ”right” or ”wrong” answer.

I guess the technical answer would be one piece of tape, but for me in reality, however many pieces it takes for me to feel a difference.  Each person will be different and it may depend on how long of a span they already have in the ball.

Over the years I have had my span length changed for various reasons, and I notice that on the ones that are longer, 2-3 pieces will feel like I am stretching the span, it feels like my thumb is hanging in the ball a bit.  On the shorter span balls, I can use 4-5 pieces with no problem.  My longer span will be about 4-1/2 and the shorter span will be about 4-7/16.

I usually try to go one in the front and then one in the back.  But it is just preference to whatever feels good for you.  I would guess the proshop person said that because maybe the textured tape in the back of the thumb hole could tear your skin.  That is the only thing I can think of.

The thing with tape is, people can put it any where they want to.
When I was using white tape, I would put it everywhere, couple pieces on the pad of my thumb and I would tear a piece in half and use it for the sides of my thumb.

The only reason they dont want you to use white tape on the back of your thumb is cause it will tear your skin up. I have tried to use white tape on the back of my thumb and it really messed up my "feel" for the ball.

If you want to try something else. Try the "Grip Strips" from Rowl Rite.
You will never go back to white or black tape again

I usually put about 3-4 pieces of the white (textured) tape in the front of the thumbhole in the winter and down to 0-1 pieces in the summer.

Occasionally---usually sometime in the winter---my thumb starts to slip out of some balls premturely, no matter how much tape I add.  Out of desperation I will then remove 2 pieces of tape from the front of the hole and add one piece to the back of it.  And it works like magic.....for awhile.

Sometimes one or more games, sometimes for 2-3 weeks.  Eventually, my thumb feels like it's hanging and I remove the tape from the back of the thumbholes.

Never left the tape in in the back of the hole long enough to seriously tear up the back of my thumb, but I suspect that over time the skin gets rougher and this is why the ball starts to feel like it's hanging.

I have also heard from time to time that you should never put the white textured tape at the back of the thumbhole. I think it's just personal preference myself.

Then you can put Franken Tape from Valentino Bowling on top of the textured tape to protect your skin from tearing.  It's very thin and works great...

Franken Tape is great tape. I always did what you suggest with the Franken Tape before switching To Magic Carpet about 18 months ago.
