Shur-Hook, Corks, and a like...need opinions
« on: May 04, 2012, 03:27:41 PM »
I recently got away from using Ron C's carpet tape. The product is great, I've been using them for years. But, I developed discoloration on the back side of my thumb and because of the fictions from the carpet tape, it caused my thumb to swell really bad. So, I'm looking for a different alternative for the back side of my thumb hole that I can use with my HADA patch.

I have 3 balls that need to fill this space that the carpet tape once occupied. Also, I've lost a few pounds and I'm finding myself placing more tapes in the thumb hole. I've got 3-5 white tapes in the back with black tape over it and one or two tapes on the pad side of my thumb. my thumb swells and shrinks during play and tinkering the thumb is becoming constant.

I know about the corks, but what about the shur-hook or any other products that bowlers use behind the thumb. Back in the day, I've seen the cork used in the front/pad side of the thumb, but never on the back side.

I just need something to snug up my thumb fit, controlling the amount of tape in the front to one or two tapes, and allows my thumb to stay secure and relaxed during my swing.

I second the thumbillow. I've tried various products, but nothing works for me like it does.
If the house is humid, I use a hada patch with it, otherwise, nothing. Great product for the price in my opinion.

I've been getting mine directly from Dix Brown, Brown Bowling Supply in Cincinnati Ohio.

I seem to remember you are in No Cal, I'll be in Dublin at Dublin Bowl tonight and will give you one to try out if you stop by.

No problem, I actually live in Stockton. I make the drive to Dublin on Friday for their PBA league. I do bowl tournaments at Cloverleaf, Granada, Diablo, 4th Street etc quite a bit, so if you are in a tournament in the Bay area, shoot me a message, I'm probably there as well.

Have a great weekend.

Have you tried the shur cushion from Ace Mitchell. It is a piece of foam with a teflon strip on the back of the thumb. Comes in 3 thicknesses and will take up some space!

You're ignoring the obvious. If you've lost enough weight that you have 5 pieces in the back and another 2 in the front, and you're still looking for something as thick as cork or Thumb Pillow, you really need a new, smaller thumb hole or smaller thumb insert.

Yeah, the better option is to have the balls reslugged. Though I never had 7 tapes in the thumb hole at one time, having 5 to 6 is still too much. This morning, all I need is 2 tapes. But later tonight, I'll be adding 3 to 4 more tapes - this seems to be the norm since ditching carpet tape.

I've been using the Magic Carpet for about 7 years and have had no problem of any sort with the back of my thumb.  Since you've only recently developed this problem, I think it's because of your weight loss and reduction in thumb size.  Deal with the real problem instead of applying bandaids.  --  JohnP

Since you were already using Magic Carpets and lost weight, could you have been bending your thumb to hang onto the ball?  This would put more pressure on the back of the thumb and thus, more friction from the Magic Carpet and irritation there.

I know that when I first started using Magic Carpet, the back of my thumb got sore, but after a few weeks the skin toughened up and I've had no issues since.

Maybe not, Gary.

I tried the MC and got used to it quickly, maybe 1 or 2 league and practice session.
Then strangely about 1 month later, it started irritating the back of my thumb. It got all red and sore. I gave up and removed it. Just used Vise Grips Hada tape ever since.
