half thumb
« on: February 28, 2009, 11:15:43 AM »
I grip my ball, always have for 27 years, it works for me.  I've tried to have my thumb in all the way and that doesn't work.

My question is, does anyone use half their thumb.  Not left or right half!!    But to just use the tip of my thumb in the ball for control to then have more fingers in the ball.    I am thinking of having my thumbholes partially plugged to do this.  So I have my thumb "all the way in" the hole.

any thoughts, suggestions etc.?

thanks

A bowler that is new to our house this year grips the (16 lb) ball with only the front half of his thumb.  When he delivers it, he looks like he's no-thumbing, but he does have half of it in.  And somehow he manages to track full roller.  I'm looking forward to drilling a ball for him in the near future, it should be an experience.  --  JohnP

Can't say I haven't thought about bowling like that, only problem I personally have with it is it doesn't feel secure.  I think it'd make more sense to drill a ball in a way that it'll feel better using this method.

The only people I've seen effectively use the half-thumb insertion technique are two-handers who just want a little extra feel on the ball.  I've got a buddy who is pretty new to bowling who used to be really bad about only sticking his thumb halfway in, and he'd drop the ball inconsistently and had no accuracy when he did it.  When I finally convinced him to keep his hand underneath the ball and get a nice, snug thumbhole with tape in it, his average went up 30 pins.

Bear in mind something about making your thumbholes shallow -- the thumbhole itself has an effect similar to that of an x-hole, it changes the core dynamics and can make the ball flare more or less.  If you change the amount of mass you're removing, you're going to change the ball dynamics.
