This is nothing new out of Hopkinsville as they did it in the late 90's and haven't stopped since.

There perogative, at least they are giving more notice than in the past. Gives the pro shop guys a chance to move some before it becomes dead inventory.

For the past ten years Ebonite has always discontinued a ton before spring and release another 6-8 in a span of about a month mid-spring.  Who has never noticed this?

Yes DP3 you are correct. In fact Ebonite was the only company that would actually discontinue balls before they released new ones!

Some of the balls that are going out just surprise me....

SO Brunswick has taken a ridiculously successful series of balls with a highly copied core design and replaces it with a copy of AMF's Orbit XTreme......

i posted about this in the past and i promise this wont become a rant.

why would a grocery store want to buy food products that last 8 days, when another manufactuer that makes high quality food as well and has there product last 14 to 18 days?

ebonite never has product last max 18 months and the minimum has been sometimes as short as 4 to 6 months.

storm and rotogrip has always had a minimum lifespan of 18 to 24 months and sometimes longer.

i stock a storm and rotogrip product with confidence because it has the longest shelf life in the industry(for a majour player, dont tell me visionary because they only produce a limited number of balls anyways).

i want my inventory to maintain its value as long as possible. thats why i choose storm/rotogrip first for the bulk of my inventory.

I agree Tim....I mean look at some of the more recent Ebonite releases...

One remake...1 season
Striking Motion....4 months?
Evolve...6 months?
Lane Breaker...less than a season
One Pearl...2 seasons
Smash and Boom...less than a season
Clash...under 2 seasons
Pin Slasher...under 2 seasons
Magic and Magic Touch????

Now for some reason they seem to have better luck on the Hammer side of things. I think the Jigsaw is the only one to get the axe after less than a season for as long as I can recall. The Acid only made it a year as well. However look at the staying power of the Black Widow and Black Widow pearl...I would be willing to wager a bet that they sold more BW and BWP than the rest of their lines combined over the last 5 years.

I agree that the Storm/RotoGrip contingent has staying power but I recall them putting the revolving door on a lot of their lower line Storm balls....Hot Rod Pro Stock, Hot Rod SS, Jolts, Street Rods (lasted less than a season only to be recovered and relabeled the Fast and Furious).

No matter how you look at it the "cleansing" is a necessary evil when the line is that big. Out with the old and in with the new as they say :-)

I'm shocked they would discontinue the Full Swing and the Bedlam (I really like both of these balls), the Jigsaw doesn't really surprise me because I really haven't seen one that matches up real well in my bowling center which has 2 yr old BW Anvilane Pros.  It may need a little more friction than my bowling center has.  I guess Columbia feels like most of us have moved on to the Pure Swing / Total Bedlam combo, which is also pretty good.   I know that Columbia hasn't really sold very well in my area, most bowlers here use Storm / Roto or Hammer.

You start off your comments with how well you like or can use some of these balls, but remember that Ebonite doesn't ask you how you like them. They just go by expected sales number, nationally, for each ball.

Your last statement, I know that Columbia hasn't really sold very well in my area, most bowlers here use Storm / Roto or Hammer., is the start of a key. It's still not what happens in small local areas that matter, in general to national corporations.

ALl of us have seen balls we really loved be discontinued. If so, do what many do, and save 1 or 2 of them for the future or when your current version is no longer useful.

Shocked was probably the wrong word, disappointed is probably more appropriate term but that's the nature of the business.  It doesn't matter how much I like a ball, if it doesn't sell it will be discontinued and these days, it'll happen sooner rather than later.
