Simplicity = Better Scoring??
« on: September 19, 2003, 09:38:51 AM »
I got to wondering about something. Does simplicity in your game equate to better scoring, especially on a more consistent basis?? I feel that one who has a very simple setup and approach has a better chance of being a consistently better scorer than one who does 50 different things in order to release the ball. A simple approach lets one focus a bit more on hitting their target and making a good shot as opposed to someone who gets up, does this and that, picks up the ball, does this to the ball, finally fits the ball, cocks this and bends that, then finally releases only to miss their mark and make a bad shot. What do you guys think??

I have coaching and the person that coaches me says its great to have someone with such a simple swing.
He says I go straight back and straight through.
He thinks (if i can get my head right) that I can achieve good things and quite quickly because of this.
So I say yes it is much better to go with as simple a swing as possible.

Amen to both of you. I agree 100%. Use the K.I.S.S. theory.

I learned after months of scolding from my coach and pro shop guy, that the less you do to the ball, the more reaction you get.

Rock,

I think the more simple you can keep your game would make you better for 2 reasons.

1-if something goes wrong in your swing or your approack it will be picked up easier.

2-if you do all kinds of different things with the ball, or your feet during your swing or approach it is wasted motion. Wasted motion is probably the biggest draw back in many peoples' game today.

Thanks, Rock77, for a topic that was most timely for me.

Monday in league was awful. Worse than awful, in fact. Tuesday practice was dismal. Wednesday practice was straight from the seventh level of hell. Why? I got caught up in the fact that I can finally throw the ball with some power and spin, and I was forcing my shot ... again and again and again. I read this thread this morning and thought about it. Come practice time today and I just dumbed it all down. Slow, steady approach, relaxed arm swing, good follow through. That was it, just those three things. The result? I hit the pocket time after time, strung strikes, made spares ... it was a thing of beauty! Funny how well the ball works when you let it do its job, eh?

Anyway, thanks for the post! It arrived just in time.

Deb, that is what we are all here for. To help one another. I was going through some problems over the past few weeks and couldnt seem to score at all. For three weeks straight I didnt shoot a series over 482!! Ouch!! So I decided to slow down and do everything simple. Even though my scores arent huge, since I simplified I have shot 580+ both times out. I want my average to improve from a 182 this year. My goal is 190, so at least shooting 580+ will get me there over time!!

Yep. Simple and repeatable is the key.
I have a VERY simple, classic game.

The only complications that come into play for me are due to weight - as I lose weight, I have to keep adjusting my starting position/pushaway, since I'm losing it faster on top than on the bottom.

Of course, with the simple, classic game, I'm really good at coming up with NEW things to do wrong. I can't imagine being one of those guys with the complex footwork, the bent elbow swing with complicated wrist positions - I'd never KNOW if I was doing anything wrong!  I guess that's why they always blame the lanes

I see it like this.
with a simple more classic style I have twice as many adjustments available to me than when I tried to power the ball.

The mistakes are less. it is easier to practice fundamentals when the ball is under control.

Once I thought that I might avg 200 this year. now with a simpler less muscled game I feel that 210 is not out of the question for a THS. I know I'm not a 210 bowler but a simple game on a THS is so easy compared to crossing 30 boards and spraying the lanes. ONce I figure out how to play the fresh oil line I'm there. my first game avg is 30 pins less than my 2nd and 3rd games.

I'm all for simple. the games is so easy that way. I may not shhot 800 but I sure that I will shoot a bunch of 700 this year by K.I.S.S.
