Slide problem
« on: December 08, 2004, 10:13:03 AM »
I have a problem with my slide. I always stop way short of the foul line. If I move up on the approach I feel very uncomfortable, like I am going to foul. When I do my approach without a ball, its perfect, I stop right at the line, but as soon as I put a ball in my hands to do my real approach I stop way short. Even when I think about it, and when I feel like I am taking bigger steps to get to the foul line, I end up being just as far away as I was before. I've tried moving up on the approach, and my mind just will not let me finish close to the foul line, I end up taking even smaller steps, and still being far away. I have a pretty short approach as it is, I stand on the 2nd set of dots, and have basically 3 baby steps and one fairly long slide step. Any suggestions? Or should I not even worry about it? You can ask A_AK57, we both have the same problem. I stop a good 7+ inches away.

Dude, you stop like a foot and a half away.  I did it really bad too.  What i do now is force myself to keep going.  Aim for something close, and try to get your body as close to it as possible.  It's a mental thing.  I did this, and I actually fouled for the first time since i started bowling.

Kid, many bowlers stop short of the line(in fact, I do myself) and as long as you end up the same distance from the line each time, no need to give it a thought.

I guess AK could answer that better then I can, seeing as he can see where I stop everytime before I have a chance to move around.

WEll he stops a good 1 1/2 or 2 feet from teh line i'd say.  But he does it the same each time.  So like bones said, as long as you do it consistently it doesn't matter.

I was just checking to see if this would have any affect on my game is all. I dont lay the ball down on the approach or anything so I guess it doesnt really matter? I think alot of the problem is my approach would be better if I slid, but I more or less just plant.

Well planting for now is fine, but if you plan to bowl when you are older, you'll need to learn to slide.

I stop exactly 19 inches from the foul line (at least i try to repeat it every time) every time I bowl, and have seen no consequences from it. i used to be right up next to the line, but I fouled once after having the front 8. This made me move back in the approach and stop short of the line. Every once in a while, if its dry enough, I will move up 8-12 inches just so that the ball gets through the heads a little better. As long as you're comfortable, and the ball isn't rolling out/ hooking too early, i think you're ok.

I stop approx 18" from foul line. I can move up that amount and I will still end up 18" from foul line. I can move back 12"-18" and still end up 18" from foul line. I don't like it, but that is the way it is....
