Slide Sock?
« on: October 26, 2009, 03:02:36 AM »
Hey, what's your view on the Slide socks? I have an inexpensive pair of new Dexters and do not seem to get a good slide. They are universal shoes which should have told me something.
I've seen these and had to ask if they work? or wear out, or?? Thanks

I have one in my bag.  I haven''t used it too much since I went to SST 6''s.  However, they are useful.  A few years ago, a guy was using an old white sock over his sliding shoe and he had no issues with it.  If you are feeling economical you give that a try before spending the money on a sliding sock.

If you mean the real "Slide Sock",
http://www.bowlersslidesock.com/home.htm,
I feel it is THE more consistent slide I have ever had. It is strange but it seems incredibly well designed and it seems to work on a wide range of friction and frictionless approaches. While I need something more slippery personally ( I use teflon inserts), when I tried them, I was nothing short of stunned at how good and how consistent they were. I have used that word, "consistent", twice so far, and I''d use it more if I could. You will also. I bought 2 of them (just to have an extra) and wound up giving them to friends from whom (to use a famous quote) "you couldn''t pry it from their cold, dead hands."

AT the price $9 - 11 per, you''d be silly not to try them. They''re guarranteed, for a good reason.

And, no I don''t work for them, nor do I even know them, except the owner posts here from time to time.

Charlest is 100% correct in his assessment of the BSS.  I have been using them for about 4 years now and will never use anything else.  I buy them 2 at a time and they are a lifesaver.  The best example I can use is Nationals.  Over the years you hear everybody complain about the approaches at Nationals. I never even think about it.  I use Dexter SST8 and still use the BSS.  I have the Dexters for the heels and the width mainly.  Go ahead and buy one of these and break it in the way they tell you and you will never have a problem on the approaches again.

Doubt it.
I know a PBA Hall of Famer who used to carry 8 - 12 DIFFERENT socks with him to enable him to slide at different houses across the country before the adjustable soled shoes ever came out.

Based on that, I''d have to say that one regular sock will never be the same as the Slide Sock.

I have recently purchase the BSS but did the special custom fit, only 50 cents more, and they are well made. Bought one for myself and one for a team mate and they appear to work on most conditions. The slide area is very similar to the nylon self stick slider from Master products. I use the Master slide on one of the Dexter removable sole pieces. It works very well but will wear down from rough approaches. The removable sole system shoes are much better than just the slide sock. I have the nylon covered one, a teflon covers one along with all of the standards. As mentioned above you can also slip on an old sock over your shoe and have about the same effect. I have used both cotton and nylon dress socks for this with great success.

Thanks to charlest, I make my own teflon pucks/inserts for my Lind's Exxxtras and my 3G Tour Ultra's so I don't normally have to use a slide sock, but I do carry a couple in my bowling bag in case I or one of my teammates need to use one and I recommend the Bowlers Slide Sock.  Very well made and consistant slide.

i use one, after going to house w/ really tacky approaches I experimented w/ the slide sock, and it worked. Now any house i go to I get a consistent slide, and no sticking what so ever. Plus it keeps me real calm and quiet in my lower body, giving me a much more stable base. Rarely do i ever fall off on a shot anymore
very consistent no matter the house

by far the best 'functional' sock around!  Purchased 2 of them for my SST6 LX and they're GREAT!  Careful when new (it's recommended) as they're first like sliding on ice.  Break them in by rubbing on carpet (i.e. walk around for a few).  Wonderful thing about them, they're reversible!!!!  Machine washable and durable.  Had mine for several years and have to order another pair*.  Consistant slide every time (no matter what the approach is like)

*Mileage may vary due to number of times you bowl

As charlest mentioned, it's well worth the price of trying.

I totally agree with all the good things said about the BSS .. I've been using them since they were introduced by our BR member. I've always bought more then one and I'm always giving the extras to my bowling buddies. Seems every team I bowl with is now wearing the BSS! GREAT THING!

So what does this slide sock do exactly? Does is make you slide more, less, what? I have never seen anyone use them. Do you slide it over your shoe, is it fitted to you shoe? I don''t personally have problems with approaches, just curious on what this is.
