How to stop spinning the ball
« on: October 31, 2006, 02:20:09 PM »
I have a really bad habit of spinning the ball.  I seem to come around the ball too much with my thumb still in the ball causing me to spin the ball more than actually rolling it.  How do i stop doing this?

I assume you're looking for a more specific answer than "Quit turning your hand so much", right?

It's really that simple though.  Really concentrate on your release.  Practice finishing with your thumb pointing straight up.  If it's past 12 after your release you've gone too far.  A lot of people that spin the ball have the habit of "chicken winging" the ball.  So check your elbow position.  If it's not close to your body, work on that.  When you practice, throw whole games where you don't turn your hand at all, stay behind the ball the entire time rolling the ball end over end.

You might also want to have another bowler whos experienced around to watch you as most people will not be able to tell if they are over rotating or chicken winging. The person watching you can see it clearly and tell you if you are or not.

If you have too much reverse in your finger pitches it forces you to grab the ball which makes you spin it more. I lost 1/4 reverse in both fingers and now can stay more up the back of the ball, with the old grip i had to hang on too the ball which caused the chicken winging effect. Have your grip checked by a really competent driller you might be surprised what you have grip wise.

I had the same problem and still do to a lesser extent.  My coach is working with me to get the fingers more under the ball.  He said the spinning is due to the fingers being above the equator of the ball at release.  I am also starting to turn the ball early.

His cure is to wait on the ball before turning.  He said I need to wait to turn the ball until it is just in front of the ankle.

Most folks that I've seen who spin the ball rotate their arm from their shoulder.  For a proper release, the shoulder should only have the forward/back action, not a rotating motion.  --  JohnP
