Slowing down your speed
« on: November 20, 2004, 05:25:58 AM »
Last Thursday, I was bowling(terrible mind you) and I happened to look up at my speed. I was appalled to see that I was throwing 17-18 mph. On the average, I throw 15 or thereabouts. I know I have to slow the ball down as that is the reason the ball is having trouble getting back to the pocket. Anybody have any tips on slowing down the ball? I know...lower the ball from the starting stance, but is there anymore ways?

I have a couple of questions.
1. Was this the Qubica speed measurement?
2. Was this on a strike ball, or a spare?
3. Were you using a strong ball, or plastic, or urethane?

The reason I'm asking all these questions is that qubica measures the speed a ways down the lane, after a hooking ball has made it's move. So a strike ball with a lot of hook can appear to be about 3 mpg slower than a plastic ball thrown straight.

Yes it was Qubica and it was both strike ball and spare shot. I was using both my V2 sanded (polished) and the V2 clean (sanded).

one thing that works for me is relax your grip and follow thru...ala Pete Weber,..try and let the ball flow off your hand...I also shorten my first two steps (I take five) to slow my body speed down.

Just curious? How are you figuring your ball speed? Does someone have a radar gun on you? I've been getting some tips but one question is they want to know what my ball speed is. I have no clue.

I seems to me as though you may be looking for tips on having a consistent swing.  I say this because you mentioned a difference in your ball speed.  Muscular tension is what makes the swing diferent from time to time.

I can't say that what helps me will help you, but, I think this ...- same back - same forward - ...feel the ball pause at the top of the back swing..., and just let it fall....  In order to change directions the ball has to decelerate and pause at the top of the back swing.  Look for the Feeling of the pause point. This will help you learn to allow the ball swing your arm, instead of you swinging the ball.  Let the swing be easy, as effortless as possible.  From the feeling of the free swing you can become very conscious of the ball and develop a very consistent delivery.

Good Luck and Good Bowling
