slump busters, i need one...any!
« on: March 17, 2009, 12:55:20 PM »
ok our trio team hasnt won a point on 6 weeks. we have lost all 8 six weeks in a row. we went from 2nd place to 8th. there is two weeks left and surprisingly we can get back in the race, it is a tight league. i cant stop pulling the ball, then when i hit the 1-3 i hang a ten. i was averaging 214 and now at 208. i have tried surface adjustments, ball speeds, stepping back, forward, tilting my wrist. i am about to go to the archive and pull out some old stuff. ebonite werewolf(the pink one) or the danger zone that has been plugged 4 times. i need suggestions here, should i try yoga while watching bowling? wipe cottage cheese on my ball or what guys?
lets face it... this isnt deadlifting or picking up women.. its BOWLING!!!! Stop acting tough when you roll 4 strikes in a row!!!

Remember that you average 214 for a reason...because you know how to play the game.

go back to the basics just get up there and bowl dont think just bowl find a target and throw at it kiss.keep it simple stupid it works for me in slumps. Having a father that was on the pro tour back in the 70s/80s a good chewing out does me good too.

DON'T use the plugged up ball, less surface. Do what I do when get in a slump, SLOW your feet down!! Keep your eye on your target, use the ball that you've scored the highest with, if you have recently changed the surface give it a few games to build up another track. LET IT FIRE. Bring what got you there, it hasn't left.

Sleep with an unattractive woman.  Asymmetrical, extremely high top weight preferable.

Seriously, this doesn't sound like a problem of matching up to the lanes.  You need to get your mind out of your way.  Quit focusing on you score.  It already sounds like the negative feedback from the corner pins is affecting your timing.  Keep you focus on remaining balanced at the line.  If you like the shot off your hand, DO NOT BEAT UP ON YOURSELF.  That will only lead to grabbing the next shot or popping out of it.  Make small moves and try to feed off the shots you execute the way you planned.  Confidence is the best lubricant for a bowlers armswing.   Give yourself a chance to regain that confidence.

well from what you said you are pulling the ball and when you hit you are leaving corners.  To me it sounds similar to what I went through this year.  Make sure you are staying down at the line.  As when I was lifting my body at the line it was creating my to slightly bend my elbow and pull the ball not giving my a good roll down the lane.  I dropped 27 pins off my average before realizing what I was doing. good luck

What he said.  Get the coconut right out of it, just bowl.  Don't worry about the score, the lanes, the other team.  Once you stand up on the approach and get ready, just turn the mind off and throw the ball....the results will get much better.

Remember the K-I-S-S Method....works every time.

Take a shot of Jack Daniels before you start, Relax.

Go out and do some extra practice and bowl your way out if you can I always like that method.

Most of the time when people are slumping they have a change in their physical game.  This quickly makes the mental game suffer.

Suggestions:

1.  Get a good coach.  It's amazing how much one lesson with a good coach can do.  Don't feel bad, pro's find coaching all the time when they are slumping.

2.  Cheaper alternative is to get yourself on video.  If you have any knowledge of the game, chances are you will see something right away and have a "oh duh" moment.

Problems can be anything from timing, swing plane, to bending the elbow, or even coming up at the line.  DO NOT try to just bowl out of it by "feel" because chances are you will just ingrain the bad muscle memory.

I don't know what to tell you, but i've been in a big slump for the past month or two. Maybe you can try to slow down your approach...I'm looking for help myself LOL

Sounds to me that you simply WANT too much, overthinking what you are doing and consequently try to "steer" your game - subconsciously or consciously.
While active in league, there's IMO little you can do. Try to take a step back and RELAX. Old equipment and actionism won't lead anywhere, just adding confusion. If you can, try to simplify your game: trusted equipment, basic release, something you know that it won't trouble you or, from another point of view, a potential trouble source you simply can cancel out. It will help you concentrate and focus on your game, not the aspired results.
