My PSO said with an oval thumb you need a different release then with a round thumb?  is this true?  Says if you don't release it correctly with an oval thumb it will hang up.

Your thumb should fit, no.matter what shape your thumb. If you have to oval it or use tape to oval it, that's what you do. My thumb is very oval and I get out of it pretty clean. Sounds like he may have misspoke.

I think it's the opposite if that's what he said. With an oval thumb i actually had to go a size smaller since it fit better

A properly fitted thumb, no matter what shape, will release cleaner than a improperly fitted thumb.

I'd say most people have at least a small oval with their thumb. In theory an oval thumb on a bowling ball will lead to a better release. But it has to be correctly fitted.

Like doom said, a correctly fitted thumb will always be more beneficial no matter the shape

My thumb is basically a big toe, so I'm not doing anything with a round thumbhole except squeezing a whole lot lol

Just make sure the angle of the oval is right! Otherwise you'll hang in it.
My PSO's ove the years just drilled the basic hole & I finish them at home w/ a round file and sand by hand. Been doing it for 30 yrs.

If you rotate the ball before your thumb exits the hole an oval hole will cause you to hang.  That's probably what your driller was talking about.  --  JohnP

That's a good point, and I just realized it's also a good indicator, and probably a good reason why I personally stay behind the ball better with an oval insert in the ball as compared to a round.

Hi,
 It is always about proper fit, as was mentioned earlier in the thread. Having said that, I went to an oval thumb last season, and found it much more comfortable on my arthritis-laden thumb. I could tell the difference, so to speak, so I prefer that style now. Just my two cents.
