Smoking law
« on: December 17, 2003, 08:22:53 PM »
Here in New York State you can no longer smoke in bowling alley's, bars, restaurants or any public buildings. I dont smoke anymore (havnt since 98) but didnt have any real problems with the people who did. I do enjoy the smoke free environment now but our center has lost ALOT of bowlers. my league went from 12 to 8 teams in 2 years. i know the economy has something to do with it also but i knew a few people who couldnt bowl without smoking.

What im gettin at is , this just doesnt seem right. All these people were huddled outside (in the snow) the other night to get a puff, and by the sounds of the griping, we gonna be down to 6 teams pretty soon.

I also know many local bars closed because of this law. I dont know what its like in other states but i seriously question who this law is benefiting.

Brimar, I see your point, but personally I can't imagine that smokers will be holing themselves up in their houses because they can't light up in public places.  As a non-smoker who grew up in a family of smokers, I'm sick of smelling it all the time.  I would have been satisfied with non-smoking sections in public places, but they are a joke since there is no real dividing walls (or filtration systems for that matter) in these buildings to keep the smoke in the smokers area.  Not trying to be mean, but if they want to stand outside in the freezing rain to support their habit, that's their choice.  BUT, if they're allowed to smoke in public buildings, what choice do I have whether to smell their habit or not?

I'm torn on this topic, well since I am a smoker.  I don't have a problem either not lighting up around people that ask not to light up, but what I do have a problem with is this "health kick" that the nation is on.
I like the private club idea myself.

Well, I think it benefits a lot of people that don't smoke by reducing or eliminating their exposure to unwanted secondhand smoke.  Myself, I don't like being around it, but it doesn't particularly bother me.  It's not exactly the greatest smell in the world either, I have friends and family that ask if I started smoking, and I have to explain that I'm around bowling alleys a lot and hope they believe me.  I understand what having an addiction is like, but there's something to be said for self control.  I'm a candy junkie, can't go a day without it, but I have a kinda painful skin irritation that's a result of too much sugar, so I've had to cut back a lot.  I know what it's like to want something so bad you can't stand it to the point of needing it so you don't go crazy, but you'd be surprised what a little willpower will do.  Saying no the first couple times is the hardest, but talking yourself down gradually starts working.  Smoking just plain isn't good for anybody, I'll never understand how people get started.

Here in Floriday it's been that way for a few months.  At first it seemed pretty inconveniant for the smoking crowd, but honestly i think it has become pretty easy for everyone to cope with.  We don't have the problem with the weather, so people aren't worried about freezing when they need to go smoke.  I am not a smoker, but my father is and I find it much nicer being able to come home from bowling and not smelling like an ash tray.

Well for 13 years I had a nicotine habit that I broke.  I will say this the problem I have always had with smoking is that it infringes on others.  When I dipped snuff I hurt nobody, but myself.  Look at all the people that have no choice, but to smoke right along with the smoker.  Does it bother me not in the least.  Who cares I guess I just think it is wrong to force it on others that do care.

Here is another problem....can't please everyone all the time I guess.  what about banning smoking in the alley but allowing it in the bar?  I figure it is a given that there is smoke in a bar, one of those last places where if the smoke bothers you that much, don't go to one.   It isn't a perfect solution, but better than all over the place.

no smoking in bars in New York state either. No smoking in any public buildings of any sort. unless it has a walled in and ventilated room.
And here in NY alot of people quit anyway in past few years cause smokes are $5.50 a pack.

Why do smokers feel that since their smoke doesn't bother them so it shouldn't bother you? I am glad here in NYS you can't smoke anymore. If they want to smoke at home or in their car that is their business and I don't care, but when they involve me I too have a say. Being covered in second hand smoke is no less offensive than being pee'd on by a drunk. I fully understand they think that their civil rights have been violated. But, why about non-smokers rights??? You don't have to smoke you choose to I however don't know anyone who chooses to breathe, you have to. I personally don't care if smokers smoke themselves into jerky, just don't involve me.

Where did that come from Brimar?  Unless you're asking for smokes, I think that was supposed to be posted to a different topic! LOL!

the Portland Metro area went smoke free in bowling alleys slowly over the past few years - finally all the centers allow smoking either only in the bars or in smoking rooms.

Across the river in Vancouver, Washington, they still allow smoking in the center. A lot of bowlers who live in Vancouver bowl in Portland because they don't want to be around the smoke.

I don't have a clue how many Portlanders bowl in Vancouver so they can smoke. I'm definitely NOT one of them.

AND - it's truly amazing. In my women's tournament group, we lose bowlers when we have tournaments in Washington. The ladies don't want to be around the smoke. When we have tourneys in areas that allow smoking, I ask the centers to make our area non smoking during the duration of the event. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

However - now that people have gotten used to the non-smoking bowling centers, league participation seems to be on the upswing again.

I have to say, Im 15, and I have grown up with smoking all in my family. I think that they should ban smoking only from the center(i.e. wherever u may bowl) and allow it only at the bar. If your bowling ally does not have a bar, TOO BAD! I am sick of smelling smoke all the time, and smelling like smoke. Since I am 15, the only reason I go up to the bar(2nd story bar) is to play pool with my friends. When bowling it bothers me, annoys me, and really does not help my game, but, here in Downingtown Pennsylvania, its totally allowed, just about wherever you want.
