So far, so good...
« on: May 10, 2005, 01:22:11 PM »
Started a summer league where they will use 5 different tournament patterns.

We were on, from my understanding, the ABC shot, and I had a blast! I had 4 opens - 3 splits and a 9 pin (after which I smartly began squaring up and firing straight away at spares).  I shot 561 and was pleased with my performance.  It was my first time on anything outside of the THS for quite some time.

It was a pleasant change to have to focus on what I was doing and execute well to earn a strike.  I also enjoyed being able to cover spares and stay in the game. Actually, it was almost like bowling for the first time again. I must admit, I did get one runaway brooklyn, but all the others were earned.  It's hard to explain, but I like it better this way.  Unfortunately, I don't think there are many others that share my view...

9andaWiggle: Keep us posted on your progress in this league through the summer. I'm looking forward to the sport shot league I'll be starting up in another house on the 19th of this month. I've only bowled in this house a couple of times in my career (it's in Merrimack, NH, about 50 minutes from where I live) and they'll be putting out 6 different patterns over the 14 weeks (from as short as 15 feet to as long as 50 feet). I was scanning the high average in that league from last summer and it was 192...so I expect a challenging and enjoyable summer league for me.

Ah, once again somebody playing on a demanding shot and feeling rewarded by the results. I can only underline this experience: I play in THS house, but for training I play on a club house where they keep a deadly 40' sports pattern on a very slick synth surface. My average there is 20-30 pins lower than on the THS - but I know with every ball I play if I was performing good or bad. There is no oil pattern to save my butt or to do cosmetics on the results.

If you can play on such a condition and feel good, you can play and beat anybody, anywhere. And you learn what your equipment is able to do for you.

Go with it, and much success!

As soon as bowling finds a way to market tough shot leagues, or a way to make it known that the normal house shot is equal to putt-putt, Par 3, 8 foot rims, etc.  Some way to convey to the public, yeah its fun, but if you REALLY want to measure your game to the pro's...

Once the mentality gets out that it's not what you average on a house, it's what you average on a PBA or Sport or similar Tourney, things will kick up.  There are a lot of ego's out there who are getting "bored" with the ease of bowling or comparing their 220 average to PBA 220.  Throw a hook of, "You think you're something?  Give the PBA tourney shots a try"

D <~~~~ Used to be terrible wiffing 10 pins.  Now through much practice, can wiff any single pin spare at any time.

Around here it is fairly difficult to find a demanding house, since must lanes try to lure their customers and leagues with high results. It is even difficult to find a house which maintains clean lanes. Mostly you never know which condition is to expect, so that I normally carry a very braod ball assortment with me.

I am really lucky to have two sport-oriented houses close by - the 10 lane house of my bowling club, and the huge (by German standards... 20 lanes) Treff-Bowling in neighboring Duisburg - where Germany's premier league bowling team and national cracks like Achim Grabowski have their home turf. In these houses you get to know WHY these people are able top perform well even under pressure.

Seek the adventure... seek OIL! And LOVE it!!!

I'll keep you posted.   I think we will be on this shot 2 more weeks, then change to the next one for three weeks, and so on.  I know my avg. will not be 200, but my goal is 190.  Realistically, I think 185 is probably where my "true" average is currently.  That doesn't matter anyway, what I really want out of this league is to find my weaknesses and improve upon them.  If I do that, my avg. will take care of itself.  Besides, the challenge is fun - stressful and mind-boggling, but still fun!

I'm really on the fence on this Sports shot vs THS debate.  I've spent the last 3 seasons trying fix certains aspects of my style and the highest my Winter league avg has been is about 186. The highest my avg has ever been is 192 I belive in 1998/99 season with a 194 high during that year.
I did that with an old school black Hammer playing my usual down and in over the second arrow. The next season was nothing but problems for me. During that season I changed equipment and began to overhual my style while working with a coach. I think I fell into the 160's that season

I have had some coaching over the last few years and it has helped but I'm not back where I want be or where I was during my 192 season.

For someone like me who is under achieving (In my opinion) on the THS condition what would  bowling on a sport shot possibly do for me?  Maybe I'm over thinking the whole thing but how much oil should ever be on the lanes in a given situation. I always thought the purpose of the oil was to protect the lanes from excessive wear. If so then once that point is reached should any more oil be added to increase or decrease difficulty?

The purpose of the oil was/is to prevent wear, but it is now also used as a scoring tool.  I'm surprised that if your shot was 2nd arrow that you're not still hitting it on the THS.  Anyway, non-THS patterns just make you be more accurate with your speed, revs, and targeting.  You lose the hold in the middle, and the dry "bumper" on the outside.  So far, I'm seeing about a 2 board area to carry as opposed to 5-10 on the THS.

As for an update... shot 618 in the 2nd week of my non-THS league.  Spare game went away in game 2, but I threw 257 the last game to bring me back up!  Still loving the challenge - I can't wait to see the other patterns as the year goes by!
