So how dry was it?
« on: June 24, 2013, 01:14:28 PM »
I have not been bowling since April 1, due to  sprained sliding ankle. Today was my 2nd outing since the ankle felt good enough to bowl. First time was 2 games, just to play it safe. Today I felt good enough for 4 or 6 games.

So I take a Blue/Green Centaur at 4000 grit dull (A VERY mild ball!),
I stand about 30, hit 12 at the arrows, planning on the ball going out to 5/6
board.

The ball starts hooking at about 24 feet and literally goes into the gutter
about 2 – 3 feet in front of the 7 pin.

I don't think that has ever happened to me before, since I started bowling in 1959 …

I used my plastic ball trying to hit the 4th arrow with a roll-out shot for the next 2 games of exercise. :o :o :o

Very rarely do we, as bowlers, encounter "toast".  What you just experienced, qualifies as "toast".   :P

Just curious, but what is your ball speed if you don't mind me asking Geoff?

Ive been hearing to cut costs, houses are either oiling shorter or less frequently. By the sound of it though, it sounds like the latter.Welcome to summer bowling!!!  :o

Call me Jeff.
Before I injured my ankle, my ball speed on the Qubica machines (at the backend) varied from 14 to 15 mph. Nowhere near as slow as it used to be (13 mph).

I think this would have qualified as cinders!

During the summer, this manager (a pool player, not a bowler) will not oil unless there is a league scheduled that day. Since there are no leagues over the weekend, it was probably not oiled since Friday. I started on 31/32 and asked to be transferred to 47/48, one of the least used pairs in the house. They were no different.

I've thrown on lanes like that before. When you throw a 30 year old plastic ball down the lanes and have  hard time keeping it right you know its bad.

Been there done that. Threw two shots and left. Im not wasting my money to practice on something that will hurt me more then it will help me. No point in making bad habits you have to fix later.

From what I have seen in a few different areas now, summer is the time for less oil, applied less frequently, with A/C being optional or minimal in most centers... oh, and the centers complaining about no business in the summer.

Jeff .. sounds like what I've tried to describe for you re: Seniors league I bowl in during winter! Don't know why the senior group (maybe 24 teams on 4 Bowlers) don't speak up .. they just keep coming back winter and summer! I now find it challenging trying to get a ball into the pocket! ;D 8) ::)

Since I bowled once in the past 10 - 12 weeks, I desperately needed to throw some balls to get a feel for a release and timing. So I stayed for my 2 free games. I worked up a good sweat and got some exercise, as well as bowled pain-free, which is amajor accomplishment for me. If it were a normal practice session, yes, I also would have gone back to counter and asked for my money back and went home.

Joe,

I would never bowl in a league that had this as the "condition". Playing the 4th arrow with a plastic ball and still having it roll out at 35 feet is borderline insanity.

I'd rather travel an hour one way to another city than do this. It isn't bowling.

Still say its the biggest reason bowling is down in the US. You go to a center that stays up to date, clean, and taken care of and I'll show you  a packed bowling alley.
