So how far will the fall out go???
« on: October 17, 2008, 06:32:07 AM »
We all know that the economy is in the tank, so what are all your thoughts on how far Bowling will be affected. I see companies being bought up and lay off's coming at every level, my business is flat not dead line but very flat.

I sell Office Supplies and let me tell you Las Vegas is pretty dead, I sold a chair yesterday for the first one in a month. I was selling 5-7 k a month of chairs, lateral files and desk's just last year.

I am putting this in Bowling since that was this site mainly is, Ric from Brunswick was let go he is a first class guy and they made a mistake in letting him go. I see Bowling being put on the back burner for me maybe for 4 years, I am now in enrolled in college at age 43.

Taking accelerated Accounting classes and hopefully being a CPA or CFO in 4-5 years, never thought after 20 years of being self employed I would be where I am right here and now. I am grateful to have a good job still being an independent sales person still for a solidly backed company.

What bowling and major changes are you making in life???  I feel we are family here not just in forums of a certain ball company, like every family we all have different views and there are some black sheep maybe me on that one haha

Bowling is on the back burner for me right now as well. With a recent divorce, kid in college, and with me making about 20k less than 5 years ago when the job I had moved to China, I had to take a break for at least this season.

Well, I am a truck driver. For the last 13 yrs, I have been delivering groceries to independent owned stores.

Sadly, these are usually the first ones to feel the crunch. I have been noticing the volume falling off and orders slowing down quite a bit.

I guess if I have to, I will take a longhaul job, but that would mean being away from my home, family, and everything else I've ever done.

Right now, I am still bowling, but am down to one night a week and no practice sessions. If that's not enough, I guess I'll just have to quit and wait for better times.

Agreed it will be hard through 2009 and then I see real recovery coming, it will improve but money will be tight for another year or so.

I went out of business with a 710 credit score and my business partner was 783, everybody shot us down for more capital. We both had no lates or credit issues ever, I knew 6 months ago how bad it is still going to get.

Yes they did not let the big boy banks go down, the problem is all of the small employers that will not be able to attain more working capital to grow or maintain the rising costs of running a business.

Small business is what drives this country forward, the effect is still fully coming trust me on this I know from real world experience. I had my 2nd largest month ever the same month I was getting denied more capital loans.

I called my banker and was told too bad for you, we feel that you are no longer a viable risk. Well i guess that he was right and we just closed down and moved on, then they wanted to know what happened so i told them we decided we were no longer going to worry about them either.

Hate to say it but neither of the two guys running for president are the answer.  Alot of this goes back to corporate America.  I was laid off after 8 years with the phone company that has the network.  They worked you 70 to 80 hours a week and 24/7 on call and paid you for 40.  When you said something about it they lay you off.  After laying of 40000 plus people over the last few years they wonder why things in parts of their business are a little strange.  I had a gripe with Brunswick.  Sure the cost of making bowling balls where they were making them was expensive but moving to Mexico is not the answer.  Neither is Lind's making shoes in China.  Americans need jobs but when a Black and Decker drill cost $79 and a generic drill at Harbor Freight that is made in China is $15.99 you figure which one sells the most.  Ask Walmart it's hard to find anything there that is not Chinese.  Bowling balls are now made in China.  Picked up a White Dot lately?  The prsdidential canadate wanting to raise taxes needs to figure out that people need good paying jobs in order to be taxed.  You can not get tax money when people are not employed.

Great answer I know many of you get it, NAFTA has bite us in the azz time and time again. The Chinese disregard pollution and can produce the same items for 1/10 of an American factory, India is stealing away tech jobs and chip making. Just watch Disney channel they even promote a new place called Baliwood to replace Hollywood as the movie making capitol of the world.

I might write a book and call it "Who is America and Where have they gone" my brother has been a ghost writer for years and has published over 10 books. I might throw the idea's at him and see what he thinks, I keep quiet on here but have many views on the state of the country and the environment.

Some very strange credit rules in this economy.  I paid my mortgage down to
about 60% of value.  My wife got sick and I tried to access some of my
difference.  No chance--the value of my property has fallen and because I live
in Las Vegas (a very high risk area) companies will not extend normal credit.
I called my mortgage company and asked them about the bailout and refinancing
my loan.  They said they couldn't consider it because I am current in my
payments.  They said if I didn't make a couple of payments that then they could
talk to me and offer me a better deal.  It doesn't make any sense that I am
being punished for paying my bills.  I could get a much better deal if I didn't
make the payments.  For further explanation, my wife has lung cancer and has not worked for the last 7 months.  So people who have no chance of ever making
their mortgage payments are being bailed out--they will fail again.
To answer the original question, I am bowling in half the leagues that I used
to bowl in and buying very few bowling balls.

I manage a facility that manufactures equipment for dental and beauty salons.  My company is losing money and the economy is only a part of the problem.  The bigger issue is people want something for nothing and disregard quality but I still have a job and don't really look into how bad it can get.  I'm just happy I am gainfully employed, make enough money to survive and bowl, and can be comfortable with the extras life has to offer.

I hate to say it but I feel it goes a little deeper then NAFTA.people been doing it to them selves for years.basicly writing checks their bodies can't cash.I know a few people who made very good money in years past and all they did was spend spend spend,no savings or very little.what happened to the days when people bought what they could afford and paid off their debt?Living in Detroit the stories I would hear about Joe the auto worker making 150 K a year and sleeping on the job, drinking, drugs, prostitution etc.etc. would make me physically ill.investors driving up the costs to make a buck, banks giving out loans like they were crack dealers and abusers of every system established are all part of the giant burst of our infected economy.add salt to the wound, the abusers get help while the honest, hard working, responsible people have to pay for it.praise the spoiled and punish the responsible!
as far as the bowling I still bowl on two leagues.I only use two balls and found thats all I will ever need.and any monies won goes into paying for league and side games.and I've also found a large diet pop is a whole lot cheaper then buying rounds and I can bowl good the whole night and win some hard earned cash.

Well, I'm very lucky.  Being in the military for the last 12 years, I've had great job security-since I've not done anything to screw that up.  So right now for me, there are no changes.

However, I do see the current situation is very crazy for those who got out, or have always been civilian.  So many with bachelors' and masters' degrees are still having a hard time getting a good job.
