new Secretary/treasurer

What do I expect?? besides a big headache? LOL. Also what things would you do to try and draw more bowlers to your league.... I have some ideas, but I dunno if I get shot down or not on some of them. I want to raise fees, to provide more prize fund and hopefully draw more bowlers, I know bowlers are tightAS$ES with the money they earn.. so that may or may not happen..... I know the fees HAVE to go up some, but my hike idea is around 25%. I also want to hunt down a sponsor for the league if at all possible. there are a few others that I am kicking around, but give me some ideas.

Keep in mind that you are not the only officer in the league.  Its not your job to be the heavy all the time.  Get your President and other officers to help you with the weekly whiners and issues that come up.

Get computer software so that you can save your time doing stats.

NEVER let bowlers get behind in paying dues.  If you do, they will just up and quit on you leaving the money to be made up somehow.  One of our leagues made the secretary pay it (over $300) because she was the one that let them get so far behind.  It should NOT be taken from the prize fund as that's penalizing the paying bowlers.  Get very familiar with rule 115.

Do not bank with the house.  Find a small bank convenient to you and use it or the local association may provide banking.  Do not keep your monies in a cookie jar at home.

Keep up on the special achievement awards.  They come fast and furious at the beginning of the year.  If you wish to hold them all year to hand out at the end you can do that, but do not wait till the end to have the entire years' worth processed.

If you are a sanctioned league, then all bowlers including subs, need to be USBC members and paid.  You need to check for sanction cards for any incoming and sub bowlers.  Non paid bowlers are not eligible for competition and if found bowling will create a huge headache for you forfeiting their and their team's games.

I'm sure more things will be posted soon

Individual Team sponsors, add that money to prize pool at the end or a fun night of some sort for the end of the season...2 of my leagues do this, Mixed $35 and 5 person team is $75

I see the role of league officers as doing the will of the league.  So while you may want to raise the rates / increase the prize fund, etc, it's really up to the league.  Those new motions can be suggested by anyone, not just secretaries/treasurers.

While leagues do grow and/or develop, be careful not to make yours something it's not.  Your efforts most likely won't be appreciated by others and might actually drive bowlers away.

Please accept this response as something to think about, and not a put down or whatever.

totally understand the vote rules, but if no one brings it up it can't be voted on... I am going to try this out for a year... if I don't care for it.... so be it.

Bank at a local bank, the president is my best friend, I have bowl101 software that belongs to league, would LOVE to upgrade to league secretary, but thats up to the bowlers.. Team sponsors good idea.. had that in other leagues I bowl in, used it to lower the weekly cost of bowling for each team.
