So I went and practiced during lunch...
« on: July 14, 2004, 12:12:10 AM »
Trying out a new Element Au79 and Vendetta Particle Pearl with the Turbo Grips Switch Grip thingie and all.

Anyways, the lanes are pretty fresh... on what is the "senior" shot to me.  Pretty early break point with very dry backends.  I'm around 23 at the arrows.  I'm all over the lane just seeing the way these two balls act.  Playing over the gutters and even 15 10 5... all that.  I finish my thng and put my street shoes back on and am about to leave...

when this senior bowling next to me says "you throw a real nice ball there.  You see that brown board on the right waaaay down the lane there?  That's your shot right there. Lay your ball down on 10 and hit that brown board adn you'll average will improve!  Look at me I'm just practicing and I shot 214 playing there."

"Yeah, I think I'll try it next time", I reply.

"You could even go pro one day.  Just hit that brown board."

"Yeah, I think that's good advice.  Thanks!"

I then went to my car and slit my wrist.  I've been doing it wrong all this time!  Straight down 10 and hit the brown board.  Whodathunk?

I like pie.

In the immortal words of Robert Redford, "What kind of pie???"

(For you younger guys and you macho men who NEVER get sucked into watching a chic flick w/your wife, the quote comes from the movie "The Way We Were," with R/R of course, and Barbara Streisand)

Yeah, I've had that happen before - lots of times. When I'm practicing my spare drills, or shooting at 40 10 pins - and someone who doesn't know me will come up and proceed to tell me what I'm doing wrong.

The funniest one that happened was when I was practicing on fresh oil with my old orange messenger. Definitely the wrong ball for the shot - but I was trying to figure out what I could do to make it work. Practice, right???
This older gentleman bowling a pair or two over from me came over and said roughly the same thing - play this arrow, and aim for that point on the lane - before you know it, you might be as good as that gal up on the board there - the one with the big average.
I thanked him very much for his input. Then he said "by the way, my name is Joe. What's yours?" I then introduced myself. He was real embarrassed.

i can relate to this...i went to PRACTICE one day with my new flash force at the time.  i was playing 5 or 6 different lines, different speeds, more flip/less flip, i was all over the place trying to figure this ball out.  a guy next to me, bowling with one of the staff members from the center, is having a career day shooting 230's every game laying it down the 1st arrow(if i threw it up the first arrow on any sort of THS it ens up in the opposte gutter)...he also isnt afraid to let everyone know how well he was bowling.  so he sees me "struggling", even though i was in the 190's, and decides to try and tell me about the lane condition, not knowing that i bowl there all the time.  when i looked at him funny, like "who the heck are you?", he called me a know-it-all and walked away to continue bowling.  i then proceeded to take out my hot wire, which i knew exactly where to play, and shot a quick 279 to shut him up.  he came nowhere near me after that, and avoids me now whenever he sees me there.  IT IS THE MOST ANNOYING PART ABOUT PRACTICING.

Sounds like you're going to need to play the tan board.

A topic close to my heart

Sometimes you can feel the buzzards circling while you practice, their greedy eyes on your game, picking apart every detail of your shot-making skills, finding dozens of ways they can improve you!  The worst of them will even follow you into the bathroom, perching on the stall wall, eye-balling you in a most predatory fashion to make sure you are enlightened by their evangelic ministry to make you a better bowler.  Often times, I've even heard their mournful cry in the wilderness of the synthetic board jungle, "those guys on T.V. aren't that good".  You leap the rows of ball returns like a crazed Olympic hurlder in an effort to escape, pursued by three, now four, would-be-hyena coaches, your practice mentality gone like so many dust mites in a hurricane.  Leaving your beloved equipment behind you streak to the parking lot and fumble for your car keys.  You bumble and they fall, only to be scooped up by one of the vultures who also has advice on how to better arrange the keys on your key chain... hours later you awake to the soft glow of diffused light softly gleaming from the surface of four softly padded white walls.

Ok, maybe a little extreme...but...Unsolicited help, regardless of the benevolence of the intentions, is often completely unwanted and often obtrusive. Remember that the next time your brain itches to "fix" someone.

Same as O, I bowl on AMF Lanes, and they don't have brown board, I think I should just resign and give up.

I want pie too.

I currently have the opposite problem.....I've struggled so much this year that I wish someone would come up and tell me what I am doing wrong.

Humble pie Tony. I had a older gentlemen tell me the same thing about 3 weeks ago. I said ok...I pulled out my Flash Force with the pin and cg stacked on grip center and proceeded to pipe the ball down the 10 board. I did this for 1 game and shot 217. The older gentlemen said is that all the higher you can score? I said yeah. He asked to come down on my pair and bowl and he shoots 279. He said see what I mean sonny? Talk about humble pie.  LOL
