speed
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:02:31 PM »
Hi everyone, I don't post often but uummm in regards to speed. i bowled tonight, i shot 220-236-213=669. what i did tonight was i was bowling more in a relax swing. my speed tonight was anywhere at 10.6-11 but normal 11-12mph yes its slow to alot of you guys. i'm an overweight guy who takes about 8 steps. sometimes i try so hard to go faster or trying hook the ball.

is it good to be in a relax state of mind where your not trying to force the ball but yet still have that low speed? cause it worked for me. i'm a stroker. Normal stand is at 25 to 30 depending on how much flare i need to go out more like a 45 degree angle.

One more thing i just started my first PBA shot league this past Monday. I wasn't throwing the same way i did tonight. so will the speed also help me when i bowl in my PBA shot league?

You should throw the ball in whatever way feels the most comfortable to you. I'm much more impressed with scores than I am with speed and revolutions. As long as the lanes don't require you to pick up speed, or put more revolutions on it, why even bother? Seems to me like a lot of wasted energy. If you're throwing good with low speed, stick with it.

There's nothing wrong with what you're doing, as long as it works for you.

^^^^^^^. +1.

Take it from me, I was throwing the ball better than I ever had, averaging over 200 for the last three months and bowled my first seven hundred series. Decided to work on increasing my speed from 13-13.5 to 15 -16. Screwed up my timing and release. I have not shot but one 600 in the last month and I bowl two nights a week. I don't care what your high rev, high speed buddies say:

STICK WITH WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.

Amen. The idea in bowling is to knock the pins down in one shot. There's no "perfect" method for doing so. However you can get the ball to knock down said pins with the least amount of effort is perfect FOR YOU.
Most of the PWBA pros do/did it with 14 lb stuff, while us "macho" guys use 14-16 lb stuff. Doesn't matter.
I nearly ended my season early this year by trying to add revs. Had to take a week off and let my arm healfortunately it was only strained(Dr diagnosis). I went back to my normal style and am doing just fine.
I have friends I bowl with who can--and do-- rip the cover off the ball. While they may more often than not beat me, I do beat them, and even when I lose,it's never a blowout.

Ive actually been working on my speed trying to get it up and finally have. For me it has helped but I had a tendancy to turn it too much, now Im getting a much straighter line to the pocket and actually allows me to make a move or 2 left. but if I dont hit dry I seem to hit flat a lot more often but dont leave as many splits kind of a trade off I suppose.

Ill tell you right now on sport shots less rev and speed can many times save you, while on a house shot you just want to throw at the gutter with a lot of rev and watch it fly back. I have watched guys with similar ball speed to you who can fluff it out all day long and shoot 200s+ and Ive seen people like this shoot 150s Ive also seen people throw similar scores playing a throw it as hard and with as many revs as they can and score 200s+ and some shoot 150s who cant hit the broadside of a barn its all on how you do with your throw and throw the way that scores for you. Heck look at the guys that throw it backwards and throw it between their legs and backwards(Ive seeen guys do both throwing 180s+ like it was their normal shot.
