Changing from 5 steps to 4??Results and stories
« on: February 08, 2006, 08:57:54 AM »
Playing around as the THS is a bit boring when i sub. Have pondered this before but never persued it except in shadow bowling a few years ago. I have to really concentrate on the first step-pushaway or the timing is ugly but the results were very good as my timing and release were much more dynamic for both RPM and accuracy. I am looking for feedback of people that have done it and what they found. I appreciate any quality feedback.

I started bowling as a 4-stepper and after 20 years switched to a 5-step. After about 10 years of the 5-step approach I went back to a 4-step approach about a year and a half ago.
My biggest problem in returning to the 4-step was that opening step. I just couldn't get myself started. A good suggestion given to me was to try swinging the ball before taking a step, just as a way to relax myself and get everything started. Swing the ball straight back, then once the ball comes back up to you, you grab it and start out with your left foot (for you). You need to do this all fluidly or it won't do any good. Sometimes you need to swing it a couple of times until you feel comfortable enough to start your approach.

I still occasionally start with the wrong foot. This usually occurs when I get flustered and just want to grab the ball and go without thinking (like after leaving a pocket 7-10).
