Bought a ball this weekend for dry lane conditions, it was on clearance due to being 3 years old. and I bowled league tonight and people were saying "why did you buy that ball it's old dude" I pretty much told them to stfu I'm the one throwing it not them! But what does it matter old or new as long as it blasts the pins they can gtfo!

Older NIB balls are incredible bargains and most new balls hit and carry very well, if the surface is right for your release and the oil/lane surface you are on. Balls anywhere from 2 years to 15 years old can be just what you need AND want and their price is certainly a major positive factor.
Most people who make comments, like you're reporting, do not know a lot about bowling balls. While many are honestly trying to help, some are just making nasty comments to make themselves look smart or trying to make you look foolish. You and your team are the only ones who have to live with your choice. Go for it, without a second's worth of hesitation.

Wouldn't bother me at all to throw an old ball, especially if it was NIB. Heck my old spare ball was a 20 year old NIB Ace Supreme ( and would still be using it if it hadn't cracked >.<

I watched Bob Benoit shoot 800 with his 10 year old White Dot in the state tournament 4 or 5 years ago, so the ball really doesn't matter as long as it matches up well!

3 year old ball is not very old by any means. Great deals can be had in proshops on bowling balls that are discontinued. I just drilled an a Groove Urethane and Avalanche Urethane and very very glad I did.I have several undrilled bowling balls that are 3 to 10 years old. They still roll.

The Storm Hy-Road is going on 5 yrs. Nobody will be making fun of that ball!

I recently got a single drill Xcalibur from a buddy, and I have been using it in our summer league. It's a shot that has the gutter playable, so this ball is perfect. I have received a lot of ripping for using it, But have averaged 225 with it the two weeks I have used it. Even on a week where the oil machine screwed up. I was high by about 100 pins. So keep making fun of me for using it! LOL

People who make blanket statements, like the ones people were aiming at you because of your purchase, tend to be people with little to no true knowledge of bowling or bowling balls.
To me, "Why did you buy that ball, it's old dude", just screams a lack of understanding.
Let me just continue to reinforce what others have said, "There is NOTHING wrong with saving a few bucks and buying a discontinued ball".
Sometimes, those older balls can be highly sought after. If you ever come across 15lb new Brunswick Inferno, Brunswick Gold or Teal Rhinos, Ebonite V2 Sanded, Ebonite Gamebreaker, or Storm Tour Power, you might want to pick it up as these are HIGHLY sought after in the 15lb versions. And they are a LOT older than three years.

And yet you don't hear a single person complain about using a Faball Blue Hammer. Now why is that? :P
anywho, you have me thinking.. All of the balls I *liked* are still in reserves for me, and the X-Calibur was one of them. In fact, I still keep the following available in case the right condition pops up:

Ebonite Turbo-X
Ebonite TPC Warrior
Ebonite Optyx
Columbia Blue Pearl Pulse
Hammer 3D Offset
I was at a 2-day tournament 6 years ago in Reno where the lanes were so bone dry that instead of getting a good 9 - 10 hours rest before the next shift, I drove the 2 hours back home to Sacramento to pick up my Blue Pearl Hammer, and made the drive back up. Best decision I made as I shot 1587 for D/S, while everyone gave me a drubbing for having a 16 year old ball at that time.
End of the story: they can complain and ridicule all they want; but it will be them complaining and crying foul when they can't keep their balls on the lane while your old gear runs the table.

If it works, then definitely do it. It's one of the reasons I hang onto a Track 505T. I bought it used and sure, it came out more than 3 years ago, but it's still very effective on a variety of medium patterns.
It's also one of those balls that I can pull out when it really counts. The Shuttle Core is definitely my favorite from anything I've ever thrown from Track.

I don't own a single ball newer than 2007. Granted I stopped bowling for a few years, but even when I was still bowling regularly, I hadn't drilled a ball since 2007 and that was my Rampage, which at the time was already a couple years old. I remember the first thing someone said to me the night I drilled it and was using it for the first time: "Why would you buy a ball that's 2 years old?"
Um, because it works? Took a few games to break it in and get a feel for the ball, but after that it was one of the best balls I've ever thrown. I wanted a ball that went sideways on the backend and that was exactly what I got. I really do need to plug the flare-reducing hole I put in it a few years back, worst move ever.

Yeah, I got a AMF Nkryption Code (2008) and Break Point (2010?) sitting in my closet, and I personally can't wait to put holes in the NCode. Still using that cover in their high end equipment, and it's a stronger Hook weight block.

You're damn right about that. No plans from what I've seen lately to discontinue it yet either. They tried with the FireRoad and CrossRoad, and look what happened there...

As long as people are still buying it there isn't much reason to get rid of it. One of the biggest mistakes I think they make, replacing balls that are still selling. If people still want them why in the world would you try and replace it, especially when there is some gamble that the new release won't be received as well.

My current arsenal is from years 2001-Trauma Rec,1997-Special efx,2010-Green Mamba,and 1991-Gyro. and the Mamba was a used ball from a friend I bought for 25.00. I used the Trauma at my state tournament,were I shot >2000.
