So what kind of ball do most of you use for spares?
« on: January 30, 2004, 09:10:28 AM »
I haven't bowled competetively for about 10 years and am trying to gather up some new equiptment to start up again.  When I quit everyone basically used the same ball for everything(atleast I did cause I was young and didn't move the ball much anyway).  So what should I pick up for a spare ball?  Just any inexpensive plastic ball?  Do most use a spare ball the same weight as their strike ball?  I ordered a 15# X-Factor Reloaded to start off with and now I just need to get a ball for the corner pins.

I've got an old Ebonite, it hurts me to say that name, Maxim IV for a spare ball.  It's a really nice brown pearl color!  (Barf)

I use my trusty old pink hammer. For double wood spares I'll stay with
my strike ball.

I use my strike ball at 19-20 mph for spares- unless it's super dry and then I would pull out my Barbed Wire for spares.

i would think that since you're just starting back, you might want to keep it simple . . . meaning using pretty much the same release for every shot.  pick up a plastic ball so you don't have to worry about hooking it.  there are alot of choices, from cheapo balls to clear covered plastics with great designs and logos.  some people use a lighter spare ball, but i'd suggest sticking with the same weight.

i use my strike ball and flatten out my wrist when i throw at the 6 & 10 pin.  i'm gradually transitioning into more straight shots for spares, unless there's a sleeper pin, but for now i'm hooking at most spares.

welcome back to bowling and enjoy!!!  glad to have you here!!

I use a visaball Boston Red Sox 14lb for the 9, 10 and 6-10 pins.  The only problem with it is it doesn't do well in a clutch situation!  Go figure!

I use whatever ball I am using for my first ball that day, except for the 6 and 10 pins in which I use an XXXL for.

I myself like Brick, use my strike ball for anything except the 6 and 10 pins, which I use a Glowing Amulet to pick up.

i use a blue vapor speed zone for shooting and spares . once in a while i will use my danger zone . but mostly i use my lighter 10 lb speed zone with a 4 inch pin . i can get it to move better across the lanes than my saws for spare . ask buzz i am one who don't miss my spares very often . if i am off my game then i will miss them . if just starting out i would get a plastic too . just grab a cheap one for now till you find the kind that is comfortable to you.
