So Which Do Your Prefer?
« on: January 12, 2010, 01:40:00 PM »
Do you prefer the high dollar, pay $25/week, run 40 brackets every night, and have people up your butt every night asking how your team is doing, type of league?  OR...Do you prefer the $15.00/week, maybe runs a few brackets, and have people FROM THE OTHER TEAM talking to you like you are one of their team mates, type of league?

I used to think that bowling in a competitive league was the way for me.  I used to get amped up to get ready for the position rounds.  I loved the comraderie with my team mates.  HOWEVER....tonight made me realize on why I dont bowl those leagues anymore.  Due to work schedule more than anything, I have pretty much been limited to what I bowl which happens to be the $15/week fun leagues.  I have bowled on Fridays with some good people that are fun to be around.  Well, I have a friend that messed his back up and has asked me to bowl in his place until he gets better.  I have bowled for the last 8-10 weeks and thing have been okay.  Then comes tonight.  Next week is position round and we are in first place.  All night long, we are getting spanked, and half the league walking down every 15 minutes grabbing our league recap sheet to see what we are doing.  Years ago, it did not bother me as much but now it just gets really old.

Now that I have dabbled in the fun leagues, I have come to realize that money isnt everything.  I dont care about the money.  I love walking into the center and actually have bowling second focus.  What I focus on first is the socializing with people that want to enjoy the sport as much as you do. Nice to be able to walk in and not talk about bowling, but what your favorite sports teams are doing, what you do for a living, and everyday life in general. Ironically, I am averaging 15 pins higher in the league where I am focusing less on bowling. And, whats more?  The fun leagues in this center have 30 teams and 38 teams respectively.  "Money" league, 16 teams.

SO....would you rather bowl in a league where you pay twice the weekly dues and have half the bowlers or bowl in a league where you pay half as much and have twice the number of bowlers?

In my league it always seems like someone is guarding the recap sheet lol.  It's just a "fun" league but the sheet is never just out on a table, someone is always sitting right by it.  And maybe it's just me but I feel like I'm being nosy when I go to look at it, I think the bowlers in that competetive league should too especially since it's not their sheet.  Yes, you are their competition, but the only thing they should do is ask you how you've done so far if that.  And it being a competetive league, I have a feeling everyone's not exactly friends so if they never even talk to you/your team I say they have no business on your lane.

This would annoy me too.

It still would depend on if it was a "fun" night of bowling....

Don't get me wrong i'm competitive but i want to have fun too.

Get to many people that bowling is the 2nd (or 3rd) thing on their minds 1st/2nd being getting drunk.

To many of the "Mr. Bowlers"  you probably know the ones.  they mumble to themselves if they have a bad shot then mumble to themselves when the get a strike but something was off.  they walk back to the seats (stay standing) and put bowling hand inside armpit (under the shirt)and then want to give high 5's with that hand as well (if you get them out of the mental funk).

I personally also hate the bowlers that take FOREVER to bowl the team that is the last ones done every week. (i work 3rd shift) so those night its ruff on me to get bowling equip dropped off and to work on time.

You make the best of what is avail.

That pretty much sums up my Wednesday(competitive) and my Friday(fun leagues).  I guess I would have to pick the competitive league.  However, this is only because the Friday league is a little too fun.  More often than not, when it's someones' turn to bowl, they are usually at least 7 pairs away, and have to be called back to bowl.

Good responses.  I have a friend of mine who is a decent bowler, averages 210, couple honor scores to his credit.  He decided to quit bowling and take up golf for two reasons.  One, he would rather spend 4.5 hours on a golf course than 3 hours in a bowling center anyday.  Second reason was that he would bowl to have a good time and GET AWAY from drama.  However, some people like to create their own drama while they are bowling.  I am on the verge of going down that road myself.  Funny part of last nights league, is that I dont have to pay a penny and yet I find myself not wanting to go bowl.  You would think free bowling is good bowling.  But in my case, whether free or not.  If it isnt fun, why do I bother?  Do you guys feel you still like the sport but find yourselves going down a different path?

Well I can relate to this topic as well. I bowl two leagues, one competitive(Monday League) and one fun league(Thursday League) and I prefer the Monday League because the competition is good and my teammates are great. Now the free bowling I have a problem with. For the last 3 monts of last year, I bowled almost everyday because I was unemployed and went to college full time to finish getting my degree. I subbed tues, weds, and sunday. The fun leagues drove me nutts because people was asking me to shoot 800 everytime. And when it was a tough night or I was tired from tons of school work, they are like wtf is your problem? Hell somehow people got my phone number and special request for my services like I was a ringer or something? I bowled so much I got a serious burnout and I also injured my hand pretty good. Now I havent bowl much in the last few weeks and dont miss bowling at all. Maybe i need this break. So I think the competitive leagues are the way to go for me because those fun leagues are okay but the people rub me the wrong way sometimes.
