I hate long oil! Help!!!
« on: December 12, 2004, 04:34:08 AM »
I hate long oil! As soon as I hit long oil/carrydown I strugle to even bowl up the boards when I can bowl a decent out and in ball.I start to carry like a wet sponge.

I bowl with a PG reactive & 2 Superpowers.I also have a Shock trauma which needs to be plugged and drilled.I am a medium speed twener.

a> What hand position would be most effective for long oil?

b> What drilling would be the most effective for this condition should I get my shock trauma re-drilled.

and

C> I may have funds to buy one new ball in the new year, what should I be looking to purcahse for this condition and why?

Any other help you can give me to help me try and overcome my problem with long oil/carrydown would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers people.......
I would have got away with it if it was not for those pesky kids (Behind my lane) and those blasted 10 pins.

PATIENCE.  It is SLOW on weekends here.  You will PROBABLY get more REPLIES starting MONDAY.

Use a hand position that PROMOTES more FORWARD roll, less spin.  Stay UNDER the ball MORE.

You want EARLY roll, so a drilling that PROMOTES this.  LESS topweight, LESS finger weight.  LOW pin position and pin TOWARDS the PAP.

http://www.bowl4fun.com/ron/roncarchive.htm  TIPS 11 and 15.

WHICH new ball?  Someone ELSE will have to ANSWER that.  I DONT know.

I've found that dull particle balls work quite well on oil, don't expect a ton of hook, just a slow steady arcing ball to the pocket. In addition to all the recommendations that g_bushman2000 made concerning hand release and layout of the ball, a pin under ring finger position is best suited for long oil. When it comes to ball recommendations, anything from a Brunswick Goliath to Track's Animal will work, or if you prefer resin an Ultimate Inferno may get the job done.

First off what part of the lane are you playing?

Secondly I am also a tweener only I am slow/med speed.
I bowl on a 44' pattern and I really struggled with it at first cause I had no room at all for error in speed or line playing the track area which was my small comfort zone at the time. So I got the owner to let me practice on a fresh shot a couple of times to try and find something that gave me a bit more room. What I found was that I could either go straight up the 5 with minimal axis rotation (20-30°) and a bit firmer on my speed or play 12 to 5 with normal or slightly less speed and 30-40° of axis rotation. When I first started playing the small swing it made me a bit nervous because it always looked like I was going to miss the break point.

As far as carrydown I always just select a ball and line that allows my to get outside and go around it.

Drilling I would need some details on how your current line up is drilled, what part of the lane you are playing and what part you want to play.

A couple of other things that may help would be;
Lower the ball in your stance (to reduce speed)
Move you target closer to the foul line (helps get the ball to roll sooner)
Adjust the position of your fingers (see "finger dancing" at bowl4fun.com)
Try moving closer to the foul line about a half a step this might cause you to take smaller steps and reduce you speed a touch (this doesn't work for everyone).
If you loft the ball a bit, try increasing knee bend to reduce loft and increase leverage.
These are things that have helped some of my friends that I have been working with, they didn't all work for everybody.

Keep at it, once you get comfortable with longer patterns you will feel like you have all the room in the world on the typical 38' pattern.

Storm Track made as good a set of recommendations as one can.

I'd also suggest, when you get the Shock Trauma redrilled, have the pro shop sand it to 600 grit and leave it dull. WHile it is not a true oiler, it was a relatively strong ball; that grit should help a lot, along with Strom Track's suggetsions. Both will let you know if you need a stronger ball yet, but you will be better able to tell the pro shop what you have been doing and give them a decent reference as to what your next step might be.

Any ball youy drill for use on heavy oil will be condition specific.  In other words, if you are not on heavy oil, don't even try it.

I have a Brunswick Goliath I use on heavy oil.  For me, it works great on this condition.
