Some One or Something Possessed Me Tonight
« on: August 10, 2008, 04:23:00 PM »
As many of you know, I have been struggling with my bowling the past 3 - 4 years.  Up until about 6 months ago I was working with a coach.  I have gotten input from a few coaches and friends, but nothing formal since Ron's clinic.

I have also been dealing with my right knee.  At the gathering some one suggested working on a more upright approach and release.  I tried it 2 weeks ago and the knee was better, the scores were better than expected, but nothing to write home about.

I bowled horribly last Sunday, 444 series with a 188 the last game using only plastic.  This week I was in San Diego for a week long AVID training and did not bowl until tonight.

Yesterday I was at Pickwick watching our local association Adult and Youth Queens and Masters tournament.  I saw all the better bowlers with a very straight, strong armswing.  Something I focused on tonight.

I had my best night in about 3 years.  I only took 4 practice shots, 2 on each lane one with the Total NV and one with the Blue Dot.  I didn't like the look of the Total NV and decided to only use the Blue Dot.  Game 1 I had 1 open (an 8 pin ) for a 224.  Game 2, again 1 open (a 3-5-6) for a 218.  Game 3, again 1 open (1 6-7-10 split) and a 217.  I have not shot 600 all summer and not shot better than a low 6 in the last year or 2.  So a 661 using nothing but the Blue Dot was very exciting for me.

While this may sound like a FIGJAM, anyone who knows me knows I do not consider myself great in any way shape or form.  I had a great night and am excited and a little bit in a state of disbelief, but very very happy.

As for the knee, it is actually looking like a knee, the swelling is almost gone, and feeling really good!

I just wanted to share, if anyone cares

That's really awesome!  I've followed your posts about your struggles, and I've felt a certain kinship on more than one occasion.  Congrats on the great night!

WTG! It's always good to get that monkey off your back. Once you get the first one (600+), the rest come much easier. It's a confidence issue many times.
Best wishes for continued good bowling!

Sixcranker - you had me all choked up as I read your reply, thank you.  I just am who I am and being a coach, I am not afraid to share the good and bad.  I do it all the time with the kids I coach.

Debina - thanks, it is nice to know that when we struggle, we are not alone.  Sometimes it seems as if everyone has figured out this sport, except me which brings on or intensifies the frustration.

To the rest, thank you for the congrats and support.

I hadn't even thought much about it being the Blue Dot.  This house doesn't put out a ton of oil and I have had a hard time keeping anything on my side of the head pin.  The last few weeks I'd finally turn to the Blue Dot in the last game and find some success.  This week I finally got it through my thick skull not to wait for the 3rd game, but be willing to go to it from the start.

My coach had told me many times, and I tell the kids I coach, you have to listen to the lanes.  The lanes will tell you where to play and what to use if you listen by watching the ball reaction.  I finally took the advise

Great shootin Thong!  When I use my "Man Plastic" I pound the hole all night but still can't score.  Once again great score.

TP,
Great set with plastic!!!I bought a Lane#1 XXXL several years ago as a ball to use when the lanes are fried and you can't keep anything on the right side of the headpin,as you described. While not used too often,I'm averaging 220 with it when I do get to use it.
You can take advantage of your accuracy, and it won't overreact.

Sounds like you're taking advantage of what your body naturally wants to and you're not overthinking things.  That's the key to good scores.  I think you'll see good things consistently coming from that attitude and approach.  Keep it up!

I think that your knee really wasn't bothering you at the Gathering, you just didn't bowl cause otherwise girl's would've taken all top 3 spots!

Seriously though, I'm glad to hear that not only you shot well, but your knee is doing better! Keep it up TP!

PS...so I take it you'll be entering in the PBA Plastic Only Tourney...?!?

Nice shootin!  I'm very happy to hear of your FIGJAM.  I too have read a few of your threads regarding your troubles, and it's great to see things start clicking.  Keep it up!
