Cheap but good new ball for beginner
« on: September 21, 2004, 03:34:41 AM »
Hiya all,
Am looking for an inexpensive but good quality reactive ball to get someone started with learning to bowl a hook. Just looking for suggestions and we'll go from there. She's 5'8", semi-athletic, with a slower ball speed. I'll probably be going with a 14 lber for her. I think she's using a 12 now, but I thought I heard that the weight blocks were changed for 13lbs and less......Any ideas out there?
Thanks,
Digs

Power Groove Reactive, cheap, good coverstock, good core, simple yet effective.  Its not going to hook like crazy expecially in the hands of a beginner but does have very good hook potential further down the road once release and other stuff is developed properly.

The Brunswick Power Grooves are great balls! The weight block is consistent at 12-16 lbs. I feel that these balls are competitive with many $200 offerings. They are also available in many attractive colors for around $100 out the door.

Digs--Not sure where you go in Madison area to purchase and drill balls but I'd give Rob Bailey a shout.  825-9027 lives on the road that dead ends <Briar La> into the parking lot at SPGC.  Check and see what he's got on special.  Has many balls that are a year old or so at a good price range.  Best ball fitter in the area IMO. Also has two lanes right there at his pro shop to watch her bowl to suggest what will work for her.

Sorry about not being able to make it Sat. to play golf.

Scotts33...I've bought my last 3 balls from Rob Bailey. I won't go to anyone else or recommend anyone else anymore. He's definately the best in the area. Just going to get some ideas so when my friend goes there, she has some options in mind. So far looks like the Power Grooves got a good start in the voting.

I've seen a 300 bowled with a Power Groove. I like it so much I have 2 NIB sitting in my basement. It's a good ball reguardless of price. It just happens to be cheap.

You tell 'em louie!!  Don't count out the entry level balls:  Big Hits, Power Grooves, Tornados, etc.  They will work for most people looking to first learn how to throw a hook.  For the more experienced player they will work when the conditions are right.  Case in point...shot an 802 with an orange reactive flame.

Power Grooves are great balls for the money. If any of you don't think so just buy one and you will change your mind.

Ummmmm the point is not just any ball is good to work a newer bowler who is changing from say a straight ball and adjusting to using a hook ball.  Many of these newer or changing players have never used spot bowling nor know how to read lane conditions.

Soooo, my point is the simpler the ball/cover/core is to read for a new hook bowler the better off they are.

Take the normal house condition that this new hook bowler will bowl on and fit them right to start along with a simpler control layout so they can learn the game from the bottom up.
