Span To pitch ratio.
« on: May 20, 2009, 08:46:53 AM »
Right now my span is 5 1/16 x 5 3/16 My fingers pitches are o and 1/8 away, both 3/8 away to maintain a solid bridge. My thumb pitch is 7/16 reverse with 1/8 left. This span is a little streched for my hand. I'm trying to go more away with my fingers and less reverse to reduce grip pressure. I worked with mike shady and he said to go right back to 1/4 reverse, and get rid of the 1/8 left in my thumb. But I know my span is to long, when i relax my hand over the holes the crease in my first nuckle goes about 1/4 past my grip, It should be centered over my grip. My question is how much should i reduce my span to go back to 1/4 reverse in my thumb also i have flexable hands ???

Yep...but it is easy.

4 1/4 span is the 0 pitch point....

1/4 longer span =1/8 more reverse and so on...
1/4 shorter span = 1/8 forward added to current position and so on...

Your grip is nearly identical to mine.  My first driller gave me 1/8 reverse, second driller changed it to 7/16 because I said I was hanging too often, third I decided to try 1/4 since I felt like I had to apply too much pressure to hold onto the ball.  I'll be throwing the ball with 1/4 reverse tonight for the first time, if it works for me I'll have my other equpiment changed to 1/4, and maybe just go big with the IT system.

Not enough information to determine pitches. There are other factors to consider, flexibility, moisture, length of thumb and others.

Although, having tooo long of a span is truely a curse as it causes bad bad bad habits that are very hard to break, at least for me.

If you have normal or average flexibility the reverse would be about 9/16.  There are a lot of variables.  The one thing I would check would be the finger pitches.  5 3/16 is a fairly long span and the longer the span the more reverse is required.  If you have a 4 inch span with average flexibility vs. the same with a 5 inch span the difference would be about 1/2 inch in reverse for the thumb.  There are lots of things to look at for thumbs. Length, moisture, shape, double jointed etc.  My bet is that the span measurement is not correct and the finger pitches may be wrong.  If you are having to force bend your fingers to match the 0 and 1/8 away in the fingers you may be forcing the thumb up and out of the thumb hole.  Get rid of the 1/8 left in the thumb unless you absolutely need it.  Are you using lifts up?  It's hard to tell from the picture but that will pitch your fingers 1/8 to 1/4 forward.

I just talked to mike shady from erie PA, I'v done lessons with him before, he recomends me going 1/4 Away with my both fingers, and reducing my reverse thumb pitch to 1/4, and not touching the span. I use oval side up with my grips. He said this will eliminate the grip pressure that Ihave.
