Span vs. Pap
« on: November 24, 2004, 08:54:55 AM »
Just wondering, for those of you that have shortened your span to a more relaxed grip, did you notice if your pap changed? I have one ball that I have adjusted my span to a proper and more relaxed grip and when I checked my pap on this ball I noticed it went from about 51/4 over and 7/8ths. up to about 4 3/4 over and 1/2 up. The middle finger is 1/8th. inch shorter and the middle is 3/16ths. shorter and I went from 0 forward/reverse to 1/8 forward in the thumb and could possibly go to 1/4" forward. What have your results been? Thanks.

Nope.

Zero change.
I suggest your thumb pitch and final span may not be what your hand's musculature, tendons and ligaments say it should be.

Charlest, I hear what you are saying. I have fitted people and drilled some bowling balls on a very part time basis up until about 6 months ago, when my pro shop closed, under a very experienced ball driller and these changes to my grip came about from a clinic I had attended with Del Warren and have just got around to trying this new layout. He stated my old span was over stretching my hand and this new one should relieve some grip pressure and allow me to come around the ball a little easier. I can now use quite a bit less grip pressure and come around the ball a lot easier. I was thinking what was happening was I had to use to much grip pressure to hold onto the ball and was causing my hand to be in a position as to raise my track. Thats not the best desciption but I hope you get what I am saying. I will mention that I was surprised when I measured my pap on this ball and got those results. Oh well, thanks for the reply. If you have anything else to add please do so.

Jish -- When you can come around the ball easier, your track tends to move slightly lower, moving your PAP as you've described.  The change you've stated is negligible, don't worry about it.  --  JohnP

I have also over the course of 3-4 years gone from 5" and 5 1/8" spans to 4 27/32" spans, with slightly dropped ring finger. My track changed slightly with that correction. But I have also made slight changes in getting to that final correct span.

When I said I did not have any changes, I was thinking and) implying that if you were making minor modifications for comfort then you should hardly see any changes to your track. Theoretically!

Of course, if you're going from a bad span (and pitches) to a correct one, then you should see some changes, since the bad one makes you do things you shouldn't.

I have a 26 year old "kid" on my team who is using a hugely stretched grip and loves what he can do with it, release-wise. I've warned him and warned him, but he's still stuck at 12 year old mental age and overly macho attitude. He finally told me if he damages his hand then he'll quit bowling. All I can do is sigh.

Like Charlest, I have made changes over the coarse of 2-3 years going from an extreme stretched span of 4 5/8 with a PAP of 5 over 1/2 up to........4 1/4 with a PAP of 4 1/2 over 1/2 up. I also now come around the ball more, of which I am currently trying to correct. I too have made some slight changes in getting to  both the correct span as well as pitches in thumb and fingers. Have also gone from the power lift side of Vice grips to the oval side of Turbo Quads and gone to a wee bit of forward pitch in fingers to compensate for what I lost when I quit using the Vice grips.
