Question for those who used a plastic spare ball for corner pins...do you bowl your normal hook release to kill the corner pin or do you throw a straight shot ?

I use a highly polished hard rubber ball and use my normal release.

I kill it for my spares to reduce the chances of finding friction on the lane, as I'd like to throw it directly straight at all my single pin spares spares, no matter what the condition is. I will throw at double wood or a bucket with a hook ball, following a similar strategy seen by the Parallel Spare Shooting steam I use, on patterns that play "long".

i flatten the ball out for my corner pins.  its not perfectly straight, but close.
I use my strike ball in league on house patterns, but on sport/drier/tougher patterns i do bring a plastic ball.

I use the spare ball mainly for right side leaves (single 6 or 10, some splits) and use a completely different release from my strike shot. I take off my wrist support, break my wrist totally back and also rotate the wrist clockwise. The result is a kind of full roller (track between thumb and finger holes) with good ansd straight forward roll, even though the ball might still hook a little when the back end is really dry or I play simply too slow.

I use the same exact release as my strike ball on all of my spares when throwing my plastic ball.  It doesn't matter if it's a corner pin or an 8 pin or whatever, I roll my plastic ball with the same rotation I'd put on my strike ball.  It'll hook maybe 3 boards if I really put it in the dry, but it's never caused me to miss a spare.  It's helped me hang onto the edge of the gutter to make a couple 10 pins I missed right on, though!  If I try to kill the ball, all I do is make myself inaccurate and inconsistent.

Agree with throwing it with the same release.  That is the reason for using a plastic ball it wont hook and you can throw it the same way.

...unless you play rather slow like me, then even a plastic can move too much Speed is the critical issue here - as long as you play pretty fast, using the normal release is not critical or detrimental.

But IMHO one should experiment, not only with the ball but also with different lines when shooting spares (e .g. corner pins) - what works for one bowler must not be good or effective for the other.

Plastic, easy.  Even if you can kill it with your strike ball, why not kill it with your spare ball and take any chances of reaction out of the equation.  Maybe you flub the release.  Plastic's still gonna go straight.  Plastic is cheap, why expose your $200+ strike ball to the lane, pinsetter, and ball return any more than you have to?  Plastic also gives you another reaction in the unlikely event that there isn't enough oil for anything else.

I use a White Dot and use my normal release.

If the lanes are dry I'll break my wrist and target the reflection of the pin on the pin deck for right-sided spares.

Apparently no one has bowled in a house with really strong backends because using your normal release...you will miss spares. Part of the reason at my house why I stopped using plastic. It was pointless if I had to throw completly straight at it so that is why I just use my strike ball and put nothing on it

Flat, straight, more speed, broken wrist and a lighter ball. I don't need force. I just need it to go straight. It's only a tap out.

No, I just don't have a lot of hand even on my strike ball, much less when shooting spares.
