Spare Ball - Grips? Slug?
« on: February 15, 2005, 05:52:22 AM »
I use finger grips & thumb slug for my reactive strike ball.  Going to get a plastic spare ball for "sport" conditions.  Should i get grips & slug for my spare ball or not??  What are the pros/cons?  or is it just bowler preference???

My White Dot and strike ball are drilled the same way with the same type of inserts/slug.  It's personal preference, but I like my equipment to feel the same no matter which ball I'm throwing.

In my opinion (and most other bowlers I think) its MUCH MUCH better to have all your balls feel the same. So if you use grips and a slug in your strike ball, use grips and a slug in your spare ball. I tried using some balls with grips and some without, and it was horrible. Now I dont use any grips, and a thumb slug in all my stuff.

Me personally, I have the span on my spare ball shortened 1/8th of an inch, to keep me from putting extra revolutions on the ball. This helps me, since I only have med. ball speed. I don't know many people that change their drillings between their spare balls and the rest of their equipment, except one other guy I bowl with who twists the ball, he doesn't use finger inserts in his spare ball (but then again, he sucks at spares)!  Just my $0.02

Since going to no finger inserts, I have noticed my release is much cleaner, and I tend to pull fewer shots - both on strikes and spares.  HOWEVER, for a while I had half of my equipment with no inserts, and half with - it always created problems for me going back to a ball that had grips because I seemed to hang up more in them.  Therefore, I'd agree with everyone else and suggest keeping your spare ball the same as the others.
