Real Deal or Vertigo for Heavy Oil
« on: March 17, 2005, 05:38:51 AM »
I'm currently thinking about replacing my Storm Triple Xtreme, which seems to have died after 100 games since I can't get to hook on heavy oil.  I need a really good ball that can handle heavy oil on wood lanes.  I'm looking at two bowling balls: The Real Deal and the Vertigo.  Which one is the best at handling heavy oil?

Either is good; the rest depends on the reaction. I saw the Vertigo thrown by a teammate at Nationals. In the out of box condition, it was sick!!!!! The Real Deal is also a great performer. I like both.

FINALLY SOMETHING I CAN ANSWER!!!

My lack of 'technical knowledge' makes my posts limited...lol.

My local lane LOVES THE OIL.  I purchased a REAL DEAL a few weeks ago and have to say it still gets a wicked rip on it no matter what.

I've thrown all over the marks playing with my throw and got a good amount of hook on each place (After I adjusted my throw).

My normal throw (right side, off the 2nd mark) gets about 3/4 of the way down then gets a 'gnarly' rip right at the end into the pocket.

For that matter, does anyone know for sure if the real deal is a particle coverstock or not?

dpunky - While particles are typically/generally better in heavy oil than non-particles, the ball companies are doing a good job lately producing strong reactive solids (non-particles) designed to handle heavy oil.  However, my opinion is that particle coverstocks do not last as long - that is to say, they weaken from their original strength more quickly - as the non-particles, so there is that to consider as well.

In all, with the correct layout, either ball will likely work well for you.

real deal is hammers new Cut-Throat light load particle cover. It is very versitale, and it is used on the Saw Blade, Real Deal, and the newley releases Big Deal. It gets through the heads well, has a strong midlane read, and dosnt have to be used on heavy. Can be used from light to heavy with cover prep.

Thanks for all the feedback!!!

I'm putting my Triple Xtreme through Ebonite's Hook It Again.  The directions say leave it in for 24 hours.  I've decided to leave it in the container for 72 hours just to make sure that all the oil get out of my Triple Xtreme.  Hook It Again claims it brings a ball back to life.  If this does not work, I think I may drill up The Real Deal because I've just about had it with underperforming backend on heavy oil.

I like the Real Deal for longer heavier oil.  But I like Windoor's comments (as well as all others )  But If I could only pick one, I'd go with the Vertigo.  I have never seen a dull reactive ball follow the oil line as well as the Vertigo.  You can move as far right as you want and the recovery and carry is tremendous.  Though the Real Deal (particle) IMHO is a better oil ball, it doesn't have the flexibility that the Vertigo has.  I can stay with the Vertigo a lot longer that I can with the Real Deal.  Both great bowling balls though.

dpunk,

If you are leaning toward the Real Deal, but want the flexibility that some have said the Vertigo has, don't forget about the Big Deal that recently came out.  It has as much hook, if not more according to some, than the Real Deal, and turns the corner better than the Real Deal(not that it doesn't  )  We have drilled a couple for people and both have the Real Deal and Big Deal.  Both seem to like the Big Deal more based on its flexibility to when lanes change.

Wow, it's a lot of stuff to consider.  I have both solid reactives and pearl particles in my arsenal.  With the reactives, I've had the best reaction from medium and medium-light oil patterns.  With pearl particles, I've been able to use them in pretty much all conditions, with the exception of heavy oil.  I really like using my Storm Ace on medium-heavy conditions and my Depth Charge for medium oil.  Now the only thing that is missing in my arsenal is a dependable heavy oil ball.

I'll give the Xtreme one last try.  If Hook it Again can't ressurect it, I'll put it on Ebay.
