I've made a ball spinner.
« on: June 09, 2004, 06:04:00 AM »
Has anyone else tried to make one of these things?  After seeing that they cost upwards of 200 bucks online, my father and I took up the task of making one for a lot less.

Using old parts from a garage door opener, bearings, scrap metal, some plywood, a flower pot and a lot of nuts and bolts, we made it for about $30.  The only thing I bought were the two bearings for $15 each.

It has 1/3 HP, and spins at about 800 RPM.  I've talked to my local pro shop guys who say they've had friends who've tried to make spinners and ended up having the ball fly off when they started them but the only problem with mine is the base wants to wander a little if you put it on a table or other glossy surface.  Putting it on the floor solves the problem.

So far, I've only used it to clean my ball and lightly sand and clean a friend of mine's (we just completed it) but so far I really love it.  My friend had a fairly new ball that was losing some of it's reaction and after I gave it back to him he said it was almost all the way back to where it had been.  Hopefully I'll be able to use it for other friends/aquaintences of mine and maybe make a couple bucks off of it.

Let me know if these links don't work and I'll try to get pics up somewhere so you guys can see them.

Links dont work.
800 RPM may be too fast. Around 4 to 500 RPM should be sufficient for sanding and polishing.

Leave him alone, maybe he saw the idea of sanding 16lb balls down to 15 and he wants to try it!

guys,

This seem like alot of trouble to me.. Just wait until someone sells a used one. I picked a Vertex 1/2 HP spinner up for $110 shipped last week and its the best thing I have bought in along time. It also comes with a 3 year warranty.

Its small, compact, quiet and very well built and does a great job with zero vibration at all..

I highly recommend the Vertex spinner..

I personally have a friend that has a donkee spinner and the Vertex is far superior to that spinner. His has a very noticable vibration that my Vertex does not have. His has also stopped on him (because it overheated) several times. He is not very happy with the donkee at all.

No Donkey. Never. Ever.

Most members on this site use Vertex. They are an excellent spinner, vibration free and are under $200. The major complaints about the Donkey is vibration. A few people will tell you this isn't true, but the people that have owned both will tell you it is true.
