General pro shop suggestions
« on: July 25, 2003, 02:49:54 AM »
I'm sure many of you have a list of things you'd like to see from pro shops.  Last year the boss and I were admittedly a little giddy about having access to so many things and weren't as focused as we needed to be on the business side.  Our customer service was excellent, of course, as demonstrated by situations I've posted before, but this year we'd really like to change some things and make it noticeable.  A few of the changes we've come up with so far are putting more tools in the shop for sale.  That way instead of having people coming in before league needing bevel, a grip reglued, or a hole sanded, they can do it all themselves, besides freeing up our time for more important things, as well as generating more revenue which in turn relaxes the finances and allows us to offer more services.  It benefits everyone concerned, not to mention saving them time as well without having to wait in line, if there is one.

Another idea I've come up with is having a section for ball posters, just like the wall space for the actual display balls.  Pro shops receive a lot of promotional advertisements for new equipment, and having a section with nothing but these advertisements would save greatly on display costs, and also create interest in new releases.  Also, for balls that have lost a little popularity or slowed in interest, it would enable customers to still look at them without us having to stock a ball that would potentially not sell.  The end result is that we'd be able to stock more of a popular ball to reduce the amount of orders and overall the waiting time for a customer to receive their ball.

Also, we'll be placing our complete inventory of shoes out in the front room for customers to be able to see the shoe for themselves, the sizes we have in stock, and even be able to try them on without so much as saying a word to either of us if we're busy with another customer.

I'm sure there are a few things I've left out, but I'd appreciate any and all suggestions, backed by either reasons for or against them.  It's all about quicker, better service, which of course is the driving force in the world today.  Thanks in advance!

One thing I did last year was use my door and my window space as a display board. The sell sheets which the manufacturers send get put up in the windows and on my door. My shop is a bulge sticking out behind lanes 21 and 22 in a 24 lane house. 3 of the 4 sides are 24x24" glass panes. The side facing the end wall is covered with pegboard unfortunately otherwise lighting would be awesome.

As for what to carry that I never thought would be needed:

different brands of tape...I find that I seee far more tape when I have Master AND Bowler's Tape in stock

puffballs....aka rosin ball....didnt think anyone used these anymore...but I sold a ton of them last year

NFL, baseball, Hockey towels...people love 'em

grips....if you can swing it, get all the colors and all the sizes. I have several women who have finger so small I need to have the "ladies" grips for them and you get some little kids that want their balls to "look like daddy's" and want them too.

Run some package deals.... Scout/R, Single Bag and Dexter sport line shoes for  $XXX.XX or buy a ball, bag and shoes and take $15 off or something....people eat that up

run a rtesurfacing special at the beginning of the year.... refinishing and bottle of cleaner for $25 or something...

Best of luck to you!!!!

Thanks Doug!  I suggested the window space idea to the boss earlier and he said it detracted from people being able to see what's actually in the shop.  Lol, he also tells me to keep the door open because it seems more inviting.  I don't know how many people walk AROUND the door to look in the window, it's ridiculous.  We have at least two of every size grip that Turbo makes, a fair amount of puffballs, every NFL and a few college b-ball towels, so we're set as far as that stuff.  He'll probably like the package deal idea, he tried it once, but it was in the middle of the season, so it didn't fare very well.  The resurface and cleaner thing is something we haven't done before, that's a good idea.  Another thing I don't know if you do or not is sticking a lot of small things up near the checkout, like ball wipes, Easy Slide, stuff that is fairly inexpensive and sells well to begin with.  It's pretty easy to just stick one right in there.  As long as somebody's buying a 150 dollar ball, what's 2 more bucks for a packet of Easy Slide?

HAM .. I've never owned a shop nor do I claim to KNOW how to run a shop .. but from a CUSTOMER point of view ..

Having a computer where the customer can access that has a MAIN MENU asking: 1. DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOU WANT? (ENTER) Sends you to what you have available and what can be ordered with a PRICE LIST; .. 2. LOOKING FOR SUGGESTIONS? (ENTER) Leads you to questions that can help decide proper equipment to offer then sends you to suggested equipment with PRICING; 3. WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE? (ENTER) Leads you to current inventory; 4. CAN'T WAIT .. WANT A CALL BACK? (ENTER) Leads you to leave info for a call back.

To me this would satisfy customers and alleviate spending unnecessary time with a BROWSING CUSTOMER.

Just a thought.

While that's a great idea, Joe, it's just too expensive.  We very seldom carry inventory in anything but White Dots really, maybe a Scout or two and MAYBE one or two new high performance balls.  However, a current equipment catalog with current prices is a great idea.  There's no way we can afford to even have ONE display ball of every single ball on the market.  We do have an equipment catalog, but we always have to do price checks if someone is interested.  Thanks!

I agree that it would cost too much to have a program like that-----besides, I think bowlers like coming in, even if they are just browsing. It gives you a chance to make a customer. Even if they are a customer down the road, talking to them now makes them a friend.

Yeah, that's exactly what we're doing!  Lol, not like our customers can comprehend it . . .  Anyway, I guess that's what we're there for, to help guide the newbies along.

Hey Hamster if you are familiar with Frontpage I can send you the frame I use to make my own crazy 8 shelf talkers. It's basically a card that shows the core of the ball with the name, coverstock name and core design, best suited lane conditions and then strengths and weaknesses, with the price in the upper right hand corner.

I can usually get the strengths and weaknesses right off the ball company sites, here or even from BTM.

It really helps the customer to know what he's looking at and what it is best suited for.

Also I toyed with the idea and I just might do it this year around Christmas time...#1 make sure you offer gift certificates (did this last year with great results) and #2 I am going to make a "bowler's gift box" to market as the perfect gift for the bowler. Included will be....

black and white tape...1" probably
EZ Slide
Rosin bag
Tap removal tool
Super Glue
Tape Residue Remover
A Towel (like a Master fun toon towel)
Small bottle of ball cleaner

I figure I can market this in a plastic compartment box from sporting goods or crafts for $20 and make a few $$$ at it. Would be the perfect accessory gift for "daddy or mommy" that bowls.

What do you guys think???? ANything else I need in there???

Yeah, hehe, didn't want to say anything, but we copy BTM's strengths and weaknesses and put those next to the balls.  Sometimes we'll get free Crazy 8's from companies, but usually only for newer high end stuff.  Gift cards are great, we did pretty good last Christmas.  That's another good idea too, the gift box thing.

I tend to make my own info cards just because people see the ball trajectory or see the hook ratings and say..WOW...that's the kinda ball I throw...I want that one!!!!

So I tend to steer clear from the ones with "18 out of 20" for the backend etc.

How about a "Ball of the Week" promotion - at least for the larger pro shops that have the inventory.  Create some space that is in a high-traffic or highly visible area in the concourse and make a display showing the ball, maybe some rave reviews about it and maybe a poster, catalog page or anything that will grab their attention.  Put a regular price and a "this week only" price.  I would think just getting a different ball into a location that people do not have to make a concious effort to see might genereate some interest in newer stuff.  After a little while, people would probably show up for leaugue curious about what's being offered this week.

I have done that 9 and it does work. I ran a Scooby Ball promo...ball and bag drilled for $70 or something.

Also I am planning on doing something with the owner this year in the form of a weekly ball raffle.

I plan on doing a ball a week and the ball available at the end of the week will be determined by the amount of money collected in ticket sales.

You could also do it league by league and then however much over the price of the ball (once drilling etc was taken out) that was collected could go into the league prize money fund.

Good way to get the shop owner and lane owner working together.
