I would throw at the headpin. Hitting the headpin usually will leave the corners which is what I need to work on severely. Also, be prepared to shoot at lots of splits that way too!!
On edit: Throw plastic too. Plastic wont "hit" the pins as hard as other equipment and should leave more "unique" combinations of spares!!

Depends on what spare you are working on,
just aim at that pin.
Make a game out of it.
Someone told me of one once called catch 20.
the object is to score as close to 20 as you cn by
shoting only the 10 and the 7 pin. 10 on the first ball
7 on the second, or visa versa.

Also known as low ball. Gutter on your first shot and you get a strike, gutter on the second and you get a spare. Just like golf, low score wins

Why are you throwing the gutter balls?

That's the point...you shouldn't toss one, which is why you get penalized in lowball by recording a strike. A perfect score in lowball is 20.

If you want to leave corner pins, I have found a sure fire way to do it.

Tell yourself that you absolutely NEED this strike. You have the front 10, or you have to have it to win the US Open, or take the game, or win $10000, or something else. I guarantee that you WILL leave corner pins.
Seriously - you don't have to leave a spare to shoot the spare. You can do it at a full rack. Multi wood spares, no. But single pins, yes.
I constantly do spare drills when I practice. But I wouldn't throw away league fees on this.

To work on the 10 pin, find a line... and then aim just outside of it, and you should come in light leaving some 10pin's. Or send your ball out real far, and it will probally come in light, leaving a 10 pin.
This is the most frequent way that i leave the 10, not beacuse i was robbed.
