I'm a copycat, please look at my Video.
« on: April 28, 2004, 11:36:17 AM »
I started bowling regularly a little over 7-8 months ago and have started to want some coaching. After asking around, there doesn't seem to be many people willing to coach at the lanes I frequent.

Here are two videos my wife took with me tonight.

From behind: (sorry, she took the video at 90degrees :\ )

and from the side:

A few things that look wrong:
  • I was opening my shoulders waaaay up and the ball was getting behind my back, causing me to miss my target on the outside.
  • My first step...

Am I correct, or way off with my self-analyzation?

Please give your feedback!!!! I'm still developing the basic/major components of my technique so big changes at this point shouldn't be too hard to address.

I'm using a Viz-A-Ball btw.

You don't have much of a back swing.  It seems like the ball is being "muscled" most of the swing.  And you have some seriously long steps, especially for a four-stepper.

Have you tried moving up on the approach to see how it might change your timing?  Just a thought.

this puts new meaning to "bowling on a wall" ..LOL

but you are comming along nicely. From the looks of your swing, you might need to get a second opinion on your grip, it looks like you have to hold onto the ball using grip pressure (squeezing). Resolving that will help termendously in improving your armswing as bamaster has suggested and also improving your release.

The next issue will be your finish position and follow through. Better body aligment, better leverage position, more solid at the line and getting the elbow to remain locked through the bottom of the swing and into your follow through.

These are the two biggest issues I see at the moment.

Thanks for the replies so far!

Grip/Drilling: I definitely have to squeeze the ball to hold onto it. It's also tearing up my thumb. Luckily, I ran into someone with about the same span as I have. His drilling was so different than mine (I didn't have to squeeze it at all!), and when my new ball comes, I'm going to the driller he recommended -as well as get my viz-a-ball plugged and drilled.

Approach/Timing: The approach has felt a little long for a while now. It's -obviously- very long, but I can't adjust much. My shoes (both soles are made to slide) don't let me get a decent push off if I don't already have some velocity. The longer approach helps the problem, but can really hurt(destroy) my consistency.

For now, should I try wearing a tennis shoe on the other foot? how much do you recommend I move up?

backswing: Besides the grip limitation, I'm do muscle it a little bit. It feels like if I let the ball get much further back, I lose control of my ability to put the right amount hand on it. Hopefully the new drilling will change this.

In the mean-time, what else could I work on to help my backswing?

Balance/finish: Ok, this where I really have NO idea what to do... I've messed with so many things concerning balance, I'm confused as to what has actually made a difference.

Could you be more specific about what you mean as far as balance is concerned? I'm bowling ignorant, especially when it comes to form or vocabulary.

My average is in the 180s, and I've had a few 257's, and a bunch of 220+ games.

Keep the feedback coming!

Nope they're clean, I just downloaded them and checked them with a Corporate Version of InoculateIT.

You might have something on your system attaching on incoming files. I would investigate your system immediately.

Has anyone else had problems viewing the videos?

Haha yeah, at first when I heard that music, I thought that it was going to turn into a porno! Haha. But seriously, looks good for only 7-8 months of bowling.

Yeah the music really varies there, and it's always too loud imo.

Anyone else have advice pertaining to my videos?
