spares, hard and straight
« on: November 29, 2005, 01:10:56 AM »
I disagree with this strategy.  Normally I don't shoot (we'll consider only the corners here) 10 pins all that hard.  In fact, probably slower than my strike shot.  When I try to throw hard at corners I lose accuracy.  I don't need a lot of speed to keep a piece of plastic on line most of the time.  I think the day of "Hard and straight" may be over, unless you find yourself on true toast.

anyone agree?

Whatever you need to do to make the spare.
To borrow the golf analogy------------
Three of the ugliest shots in the world don't matter if the par putt drops. It's still a 4 on the card.
Personally, I throw plastic at the ten and to remove any chance of the ball hooking I only use the ring finger and my thumb.

I concur with "Bones" ... keep the same speed and cadence, and go right at the 10 pin; the ONLY thing that I change is I set my middle finger as my lead finger, instead of my ring finger(which I insert loosely) maintain the alignment of the middle finger AND the thumb through the swing plane and, with my wrist slightly "broken", I lead my thumb towards my target ... you get an end over end roll.
I'm VERY reluctant to change speeds on my swing and follow through UNLESS I'm trying to project the ball out onto the lane farther to clear "burnt" heads.
My two cents ...

I also tried tossing my polyester at corner pins for some time, just with the same result: lack of accuracy. I also tend to play my polyester rather slowly, but I fight with the slight hook that sometimes creeps into my backend. Speed might help here, but I rather try to reduce any ring finger influence from my release, break the wrist back a bit and consequently have a kind of full roller track with some side roll. That's quite successful for me on any condition I have encountered so far.

There is no "right" way to make corner pins. In envy those people who can grab a strong reactive and lay it dead straight for the 10 pin...
Every bowler is different, and therefore everybody should experiment with whatever works for him or her. Taking suggestions or reading books ain't bad - the more you know, the better you will be able to make the right adjustments for the future. It's only up to you to decide whether an idea will work for your game or not.

I believe some of this is coming from the Duke method of shooting spares.

The key is being able to throw a straight(er) shot at spares. You can do that with the ball, with speed, or with your release.

If you throw a ball that tends to go straight or change your release to throw it straight (as Norm Duke does) then you don’t have to throw additional speed.

For the most part I don’t even try to throw the ball differently. I use a Blue Dot plastic for my spare shots and it goes pretty straight regardless of what I do. I just try to throw my normal release and let the ball take care of going straight.

Why add other variables into making spares?

I agree with Pinbuster.  What I have not been able to understand, is that when someone throws plastic at spares, why would they need to throw it as hard as they can?  The only time I can justify doing this, is if you need to bounce a pin back onto the deck to make splits.  If you are a pretty accurate person on your strike shot, why change your footwork, armswing, and release.  Keep everything the same.

I use my plastic ball on every spare. period. As far as "hard and fast" - the ony way I could do that would be with a 12 pounder.

I don't use my strike ball for spares mainly because I don't want to wear out my strong stuff eariler - also plastic takes the lane conditions out of play.

I agree with you Mario. I have to bring my speed down considerably in order to improve my accuracy for the 10 pin. If I speed it up, I have no chance.

i agree with MArio with a 10 pin i am better to throw it smoothly with accuracy then had and praying. I also think the hard trowers will never die, and now with teh speed indicators they really get jacked up. I am more about making the spare then how hard i throw it.

I put foward roll on the ball and few revs.  I don't throw it hard, I just throw it my natural speed when I get my swing just above shoulder level, about 19-20mph.  So technically I throw it harder than my strike shots, but I'm not forcing it.  I actually find that if I keep my swing below my shoulder, it becomes a little harder to make my arm/hand go "dead" and put nothing on the ball.

95% of the time I grap the plastic ball and put end over end roll at the spare not hooking it at all but my ball speed is much slower. I have harder time getting the 7 pin than the 10 pin though. Go figure.

Loudstriker, try moving over to the 7 pin side of the approach and see if it helps.
